At the Rainhill Trials of October 1829, held to choose an engine for the Liverpool & Manchester line, Robert Stephenson's Rocket was the only entrant to finish. Hauling about 13 tons it averaged 12 mph and touched roughly 30 mph — a speed no human being had ever travelled overland under machine power — settling the argument that locomotives, not fixed cable engines, would run the railways.

A railroad is two things working together: a track and an engine matched to it. The track is a pair of smooth iron (later steel) rails, and the wheels have a raised inner flange that keeps them on the rails, so the train is guided by the road and never needs steering. Iron rolling on iron has very little friction, which is the whole point — on a level track a small engine can start and pull a load that would defeat a whole team of horses on a road. The engine is a steam locomotive: a boiler and cylinders on wheels, driving the axle directly.

Overland freight had always been the bottleneck of trade. Water moved goods cheaply but only where rivers and canals ran; on land, everything crawled behind horses at a few miles an hour and a few tons a wagon. George Stephenson's Stockton & Darlington Railway opened on 27 September 1825 as the first public line to haul both freight and passengers by steam, with Stephenson himself driving Locomotion No. 1. His Liverpool & Manchester line of 1830 was the first to connect two cities entirely by scheduled steam trains, and it made money at once. Land transport had a new floor price and a new top speed.

The railway rewrote geography and time itself. Goods and people moved at unprecedented speed and cost, so factories no longer had to sit on a river and towns grew wherever the line reached. The need to run trains safely between distant stations forced the first standard time zones — before railways, every town kept its own clock by the sun. Railways created the demand that drove the steel industry, the telegraph that ran alongside the tracks to signal them, and the whole modern logistics of moving mass freight on a timetable across a continent.
