Synthetic fiber (nylon)
A textile fiber built entirely from synthetic chemicals rather than grown or gathered — long polymer chains, spun into filament and stretched until the molecules line up into a strong, fine thread. Nylon, made at DuPont in 1935, was the first fiber with no natural counterpart at all.

Nylon reached the public as women's stockings, and the appetite for it was frightening. On 15 May 1940, the first day nylon hosiery went on sale nationwide in the United States, some 780,000 pairs sold across the country — about 72,000 in New York alone; the roughly four million pairs shipped to shelves sold out in the most-wanted sizes within days, and some 64 million pairs sold in the first year. It was mass hysteria over a fiber that had not existed five years earlier — a molecule first pulled in a laboratory on 28 February 1935.

Nylon is a polyamide: a polymer whose long molecules are chains of small units joined by amide bonds — the very same chemical linkage that strings amino acids into the proteins of silk and wool. The difference is origin. Silk is spun by an animal; nylon is built from simple industrial chemicals (a diamine and a diacid, classically hexamethylenediamine and adipic acid) that react end-to-end into chains thousands of units long. Melt that polymer, force it through the fine holes of a spinneret, and it emerges as filament. The crucial last step is *cold drawing*: the fresh filament is stretched to several times its length, which pulls the tangled molecular chains into parallel alignment along the fiber. That alignment is what turns a weak strand into a strong, fine, elastic thread.

Every fiber humanity had ever used was grown or gathered — cotton and linen from plants, wool and silk from animals, and the early "artificial" fibers like rayon were merely reconstituted natural cellulose. Nylon proved a useful textile fiber could be manufactured outright, its properties chosen by chemistry: how strong, how fine, how elastic, how it took dye. It was stronger for its weight than natural fibers, resistant to rot and moths, and it could be made in any quantity a factory could run, independent of harvest or silkworm. That broke a constraint as old as clothing itself.

Nylon opened the age of synthetic textiles. It went from stockings to parachutes, ropes, and tire cord in the Second World War, then to carpets, clothing, fishing line, and toothbrush bristles, and as an engineering plastic into gears and bearings. It proved the template — a designed polymer, melt-spun and drawn — that gave the following decades polyester, acrylic, and the high-strength fibers like aramid. Most fabric produced in the world today is synthetic fiber, descended from the demonstration that you could build a thread molecule from scratch and stretch it into cloth.
