You do not need a long, hard boil: the germs behind virtually all waterborne disease are killed well below 100 °C, so water is already being disinfected as it heats — by the time it reaches a rolling boil it is essentially safe. This is why boiling still works high on a mountain, where thin air makes water boil cooler than at sea level; give it a few extra minutes up there to be sure.

The oldest and most reliable method is heat: bringing water to a boil destroys the bacteria, viruses, and parasites that cause most waterborne illness. Cheaper methods work with little or no fuel: letting sediment settle and straining through sand or cloth clear the water — a useful first step — while leaving clear water in strong sun (solar disinfection) can actually kill germs with no fuel at all.

- · A heat-resistant vessel (clay pot or metal container)
- · Fuel and a fire that can hold a steady boil
- · The clearest water available (pre-settled or pre-filtered if muddy)
- · A tightly-woven clean cloth for straining (optional)

- 01If the water is cloudy, let it stand until sediment settles, then pour off the clear top layer; or strain it through tight cloth.
- 02Pour the clearest water into the vessel.
- 03No fireproof pot? Drop fire-heated stones into a water-filled hide, basket, or wooden trough to bring it to a boil instead.
- 04Heat until it reaches a rolling boil — big bubbles breaking across the whole surface.
- 05Hold that rolling boil for one full minute (three minutes above roughly 2,000 m / 6,500 ft, where thinner air lowers the boiling point).
- 06Cover and let it cool without adding untreated water, ice, or dirty hands.
- 07Store in a clean, covered container; pour rather than dip so you do not re-contaminate it.

Boiled water is safe from living pathogens but not from chemical poisons or heavy metals. Clarity is not safety: clear water can be deadly and boiled cloudy water can be safe. Trust the rolling boil, not the look of it.
