The World Wide Web
A system of documents that live anywhere on the internet, each reachable by a universal address and able to link directly to any other. It is not the internet itself but an application running on top of it — hypertext, made global by three simple conventions: addresses (URLs), a transfer protocol (HTTP), and a markup language (HTML).

In March 1989 Tim Berners-Lee handed his manager at CERN a document titled "Information Management: A Proposal." His manager, Mike Sendall, scrawled two words across the top — "Vague but exciting" — and set it aside. It sat for over a year before Berners-Lee was allowed to build it, on a spare NeXT computer; the first web page went live in August 1991. Then, in 1993, CERN placed the entire thing in the public domain, royalty-free — quietly giving away one of the most valuable inventions in history.

The World Wide Web is a global collection of documents that can point at one another regardless of where they physically sit. Its power comes from three modest conventions working together. A URL gives every document a single universal address, so a link can name any page anywhere on Earth. HTTP is the request-and-response protocol a browser and a server use to fetch that document. HTML is the markup that describes a page's structure and, crucially, embeds links — clickable references to other URLs. Put these together and you get hypertext without borders: a document in one country can link straight into a document in another, and following that link is a single click. People often conflate the web with the internet, but they are different layers — the internet moves packets between machines; the web is one of the things those packets carry.

Berners-Lee, working at CERN, wrote the proposal in 1989 to solve a local problem: the laboratory's knowledge kept getting lost as people and projects came and went, and he wanted a way to link documents across incompatible systems. Over 1990 he built the pieces himself on a NeXT computer — the first web server, the first browser (called WorldWideWeb), and the first versions of URLs, HTTP, and HTML. The first web page went online in August 1991 at info.cern.ch, describing the project and how to join it. Growth was slow until graphical browsers such as Mosaic (1993) made the web easy for non-experts, and that same year CERN renounced all rights and released the web's software into the public domain, ensuring no company could own or charge for the standard. That decision — openness by design — is much of why the web, and not some proprietary rival, became universal.

The web became the dominant way people use the internet and, for most of the world, the internet's public face. Search engines, online encyclopedias, social networks, e-commerce, streaming, and web applications all live on the foundation Berners-Lee laid, and the open standards he insisted on let anyone build on it without permission.
