If we ever have to start over

This is the document we wish had always existed: what to do, in what order, if civilization collapses and the survivors have nothing but this archive and their own curiosity.

Read it carefully and it carries one enormous piece of good news: a restart does not replay history. History took three hundred thousand years because nobody knew the order. Germ theory is 160 years old, but boiling water costs nothing on day one. Crop rotation took millennia to discover and takes one paragraph to transmit. With the order written down, the climb back is measured in decades — not millennia.

The phases below are ordered by dependency and by lives-saved-per-effort, not by the dates things happened to be discovered. They overlap: a phase begins when its prerequisites exist, not when the previous phase ends. And one rule runs through all of them — verify before you rely. Every capability names how you know it worked, before you bet the harvest on it.

Uncharted entries are the archive's public roadmap. Every one will become a full capability page with a verified bootstrap recipe. No fake completeness — a hollow protocol would betray the mission.

The wager

A hundred years, not ten thousand.

Civilization took roughly twelve thousand years because almost all of that time was spent discovering — wandering a maze with no map, repeating dead ends, losing libraries and starting over. The building itself was never the bottleneck. Knowing is.

This Blueprint is the map through the maze: the dependency order, the recipes, the failure modes, and the dead ends pre-marked. Our working claim — the number this whole archive answers to — is that a determined community holding this document could climb from bare hands to microchips in about a century: four generations instead of four hundred.

The phases below overlap deliberately; they are parallel tracks, not a queue. Each carries its window on the hundred-year clock, the gate that proves you've passed it, and the specific reason the replay runs faster than history did.

Phase 00 · month 0–1 · 5/5 charted

Survive the month

Keep everyone alive while the shock is absolute.

Nothing else in this document matters if the group dies in week one. Everything in this phase is pure knowledge — no infrastructure required, only the knowing.

why the replay is fast · No leapfrog needed — survival was always pure knowledge. History's cost here was never time; it was the lives lost to not knowing that boiling water works.

Eat reliably

Replace scavenging with a food supply that repeats every year.

Agriculture buys the time for every phase after it. A group that must forage all day can never specialize.

why the replay is fast · History stumbled into domestication over ~4,000 years of accident. You arrive knowing which species domesticate, that seed selection compounds, what manure and rotation do to soil. Three harvests, not forty centuries.

Keep knowledge alive

Make sure the second generation knows more than the first.

Skills die with people; writing does not. This phase exists so that no discovery ever has to be made twice — it is the reason this Blueprint can work at all.

why the replay is fast · Writing appeared ~5,000 years after farming, and the scientific method ~5,000 after that. You carry both in on day one — which is precisely why every later phase runs at book-speed instead of legend-speed.

you've passed this phase when · Children are being taught to read and count; every experiment and failure is being written down.

Make things

Turn earth, wood, and fire into tools, containers, and materials.

Every later machine descends from this workshop.

why the replay is fast · Skip bronze entirely. History's 2,000-year bronze age existed because iron smelting demands know-how, not because it demands rare tin. Iron ore is everywhere; the bloomery recipe is in this archive.

Phase 04 · years 1–10 · 4/4 charted

Organize trust

Make cooperation survive disagreement.

Technology without institutions collapses. Beyond about 150 people, trust stops being automatic and has to be engineered.

why the replay is fast · Institutions are recipes too. Contracts, courts, and money took millennia of bloody trial and error — but they are written procedures, and you have the debugged versions.

you've passed this phase when · Strangers trade on promises, disputes end in judgments instead of feuds, and one farmer feeds five people.

Phase 05 · years 1–10 · 6/6 charted

Heal at scale

Stop dying of things that are cheap to prevent.

Deliberately early. Sanitation needs no microscope — the practice works centuries before the proof. This phase is the highest lives-saved-per-effort in the entire graph, and historically it arrived insanely late.

why the replay is fast · The largest leapfrog in the Blueprint. Germ theory arrived ~10,000 years into civilization because nobody could see the enemy. You practice it from day one and build the microscope later, purely to convince the skeptics. Sanitation before cities, not after plagues.

you've passed this phase when · Hands are washed, water and waste never mix, and losing a child has become rare instead of expected.

Phase 06 · years 3–15 · 5/5 charted

Multiply force

Do more than muscles allow.

Between muscle and steam lies a millennium of mechanical advantage that costs nothing but geometry.

why the replay is fast · Mechanical advantage is geometry, and you have geometry from phase 02. The classical world took a thousand years to put the water wheel to serious work; a workshop that knows what it's building needs a season.

Phase 07 · years 8–25 · 4/4 charted

Extend the senses

See smaller, farther, and more precisely than eyes allow.

Instruments are how nature answers back, and measurement is how workshops become industries. Every science accelerates the moment its instrument exists.

why the replay is fast · History waited 300 years between spectacles and the microscope — a conceptual gap, not a technical one. You know in advance that two lenses in a tube reveal the invisible world, so glass leads to optics in a single step.

Phase 08 · years 15–40 · 9/9 charted

Power and chemistry

Industrial energy and industrial matter.

Steam frees work from rivers and muscle; chemistry turns matter into a menu. Together they are the escape velocity of the industrial age.

why the replay is fast · The battery-to-generator century compresses into years: Volta to Faraday was mostly the discovery that the phenomena connect, and that discovery is in your saddlebag. Steam still matters, but you build it knowing electricity is the destination.

The precision ascent

Machines accurate enough to make better machines.

The hidden staircase between the blacksmith and the semiconductor fab. Precision compounds like interest — every generation of tools makes the next generation possible.

why the replay is fast · Precision compounds like interest, and knowing the staircase exists is most of the climb. History felt its way from Maudslay's lathe to gauge blocks in 130 years; a workshop that knows each step is coming can take them in twenty.

Phase 10 · years 40–80 · 8/8 charted

Record and compute

Copy knowledge faster than it can be lost — then make it calculate.

Printing ended the age of forgetting; computing ended the age of manual thought. This phase is how the archive stops being fragile.

why the replay is fast · The 1947 point-contact transistor needs germanium, gold foil, and the knowledge that it can work — no fab, no cleanroom. Computing's hard part was believing a crystal could switch; you already believe it.

Reconnect the world

One planet, one conversation, one map again.

Isolated groups rediscover; connected ones compound. Reconnection is what turns a thousand villages back into a civilization.

why the replay is fast · Radio before satellites, packet-switching as a document instead of a Cold War accident. The internet's deepest ideas fit on a hundred printed pages — carrying them is free.

This document is not a relic; it is a discipline. Verify every entry against reality. Correct what is wrong. Chart what is missing. Teach a child to read it. Whoever you are, wherever in the climb you stand — you are the cartographers now.

why the replay is fast · This is the phase history never ran — every collapse before ours lost the library. One maintained, verified, mirrored archive is the difference between a 100-year climb and a 10,000-year one.
