When the chain-driven "safety" bicycle arrived in the 1880s and the pneumatic tyre followed in 1888, cheap, stable cycling set off a boom that reshaped women's lives — it demanded lighter, split clothing in place of corsets and long skirts, and gave women unchaperoned mobility for the first time. In 1896 Susan B. Anthony said bicycling "has done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world."

A bicycle is two wheels in a line under a frame the rider balances. It has no wide base and cannot stand on its own; it stays up only because the rider steers into each fall, so the wheels roll back underneath the shifting weight. That is the counter-intuitive heart of it — you keep a bicycle upright by aiming it, continuously, at the ground it is falling toward. Once moving, it is the most efficient machine humans have for turning their own effort into distance.

Before the bicycle, personal travel meant your own two feet or an animal you had to own, stable, and feed. The bicycle gave an ordinary person, at the cost of a modest one-time purchase, the range of a horse with none of its upkeep — two to four times walking speed under their own legs. Karl von Drais built the first two-wheeler, the running machine, in 1817; it was a curiosity for smooth new roads. The machine only became universal when the 1880s "safety" design put two equal wheels, a chain drive to the rear wheel, and a low seat within reach of everyone.

The 1890s bicycle boom did more than move people. It built the first mass market for precisely machined, interchangeable metal parts — ball bearings, chains, tubular steel frames, wire-spoked wheels — and the mechanics and machine shops that came out of it went straight on to build motorcycles, automobiles, and the Wright brothers' first aeroplane. Socially, cheap cycling gave working people and, above all, women a mobility and independence they had never had, and forced the loosening of the clothing that had literally constrained them.

  • · A straight, stiff hardwood beam (ash) about 1.5 m long for the backbone
  • · Two spoked wooden carriage wheels of near-equal diameter (~27 in), iron-shod on the rim
  • · A front fork that pivots on a vertical iron pin, with a bar or tiller to steer it
  • · A padded saddle set low on the beam, and a forearm rest ahead of it
  • · Iron axle pins and tallow grease for the bearings

Schritte

  1. 01Fix the rear wheel's axle rigidly to the back of the beam.
  2. 02Carry the front wheel in the pivoting fork so it can be turned left and right by the steering bar.
  3. 03Set the saddle low enough that a seated rider can plant both soles flat on the ground.
  4. 04Grease the two axle bearings with tallow so the wheels spin free under load.
  5. 05Ride by striding: push off with alternating feet, build to a run, then lift the feet and coast, steering small corrections into each lean to stay upright.

On a smooth, gently downhill road you can lift both feet and coast in a straight line for a stretch, balancing by tiny steering corrections, faster than you could walk. Drais rode the roughly 7 km from Mannheim to the Schwetzingen relay house and back in about an hour on 12 June 1817 — some four times walking speed. The coast is the whole test: if it only stays up while a foot touches the ground, it is not yet balancing.

Was schiefgeht

  • Front wheel fixed rigid (no steering pivot) — you cannot correct a lean, so balance is impossible; steering, not pedalling, is what a two-wheeler needs first.
  • Wheels too small or the wheelbase wrong — the machine is twitchy and falls the instant both feet leave the ground.
  • Saddle set too high — the rider cannot reach the ground to push off or catch a fall.
  • Iron-shod wooden wheels on rutted mud — they bog and jar; the draisine only ran well on the new smooth graded roads, which is why good roads had to come first.
