The word "cell" is older than the theory by nearly two centuries. Robert Hooke coined it in 1665, peering at a shaving of cork through his microscope: the tiny empty boxes reminded him of the bare little rooms — cellulae — where monks slept. He was looking at the dead walls of long-gone plant cells and naming the smallest room in biology.

Cell theory is three linked claims: all living organisms are composed of one or more cells; the cell is the smallest unit that is itself alive; and every cell comes from the division of a pre-existing cell. A tree, a fish, and a human are, at bottom, vast colonies of these units, each a walled parcel of living material carrying on the business of life. Nothing living is made of anything more fundamental that is itself alive.

Cell theory gave biology its atom. Once life had a universal building block, growth, healing, reproduction, and disease could all be reframed as things that happen to and between cells: a wound heals because cells divide, a tumor is cells dividing without restraint, an infection is foreign cells (or the smaller agents that attack them) multiplying inside you. Rudolf Virchow built modern pathology on exactly this in the 1850s — disease as cellular malfunction — which is still how medicine reasons today.

The pieces came together in Germany in the late 1830s. In 1838 the botanist Matthias Schleiden argued that all plant tissues are built of cells; the next year the physiologist Theodor Schwann extended the claim to animals, uniting the two kingdoms under a single structural principle in his 1839 monograph. Their original idea of how new cells form — crystallizing out of a formless fluid — was wrong. The correction came from Robert Remak and Rudolf Virchow, who showed that cells arise only by the division of existing cells, captured in Virchow's 1855 slogan *omnis cellula e cellula*: every cell from a cell. That closed the door, at the cellular level, on spontaneous generation.

Cell theory is the trunk from which most of modern biology and medicine grows: histology, pathology, embryology, and eventually the understanding that heredity is carried inside cells, in structures that divide when they do. Germ theory, cancer biology, immunology, and genetics all speak in cells. When Virchow declared that disease begins in the cell, he set the address at which twentieth-century medicine would do nearly all of its work.
