Division of Labor
Splitting work so each person does one thing well instead of everything badly — the arrangement that turns food surplus into every other profession.

✦ Moment, wirklich?
Adam Smith opened *The Wealth of Nations* (1776) with a real pin factory: ten workers, each handling a few steps, made about 48,000 pins a day — where one worker doing every step alone, he judged, could scarcely make twenty. Division of labor alone multiplied output roughly 240-fold.
Was es ist
Division of labor is the practice of splitting production into roles, so that individuals specialize — one farms, one smiths, one heals, one teaches — and trade their outputs instead of each household making everything for itself. It appears in the archaeological record soon after farming, in early Neolithic towns where some residents appear to have concentrated on obsidian tools, beads, and pottery — part-time craft production that hardened into full-time occupation over time. It is less an invention than a standing bargain: your food for my craft.
Warum es zählte
A forager or subsistence farmer must be mediocre at fifty tasks; a specialist can be excellent at one, and excellence compounds — the full-time smith discovers what the occasional smith never will. Agricultural surplus is the payroll of civilization: one farmer feeding five frees four for everything else, and every profession in this archive — scribe, judge, mason, physicist — exists only because someone else grew their dinner. The share of people freed from food production is close to a civilization's ceiling: where nearly everyone farms, nearly nothing else can be attempted.
Wie es gemacht wurde
It emerged wherever farming yields passed subsistence: households traded surplus grain to neighbors who were better at pots or blades, part-time craft hardened into full-time occupation, and temples and chiefs formalized the flow by collecting surplus and rationing it out to dedicated specialists. Towns then sorted internally into quarters of potters, weavers, and smiths. A restarting group re-establishes it deliberately: measure the surplus, identify the scarcest skills, and formally exempt their holders from farm work while guaranteeing their food — because a smith who must also farm is half a smith.
Was es erschloss
Full-time metallurgy, construction, medicine, priesthood, administration, and soldiery — the entire occupational structure of cities. It creates the demand for money and markets (specialists must trade to eat) and for teaching (specialties must be transmitted). Smith's pin factory is the same principle at industrial pitch, and the assembly line is its logical end point.
Kleinste funktionsfähige Version
Once farmers grow more than they eat, release the best potter, smith, and healer from field work and feed them from the surplus in exchange for their goods and services — a village-scale barter of food for skill.
