Algebra
A systematic method for finding an unknown quantity by writing down what is known about it and transforming the statement — moving terms across the balance, cancelling like against like — until the unknown stands alone. It turns "what number, tripled and increased by four, gives nineteen?" into a procedure anyone can run.

In medieval Spain an "algebrista" was not a mathematician but a bone-setter. Al-Khwarizmi's word al-jabr means the restoration or reuniting of broken parts; barbers who reset dislocated bones borrowed the same term, and it appears in Don Quixote for exactly that trade — the man who puts a snapped leg back together and the operation that puts a subtracted term back on the other side of an equation share one name.

Algebra is the art of reasoning about a number you don't yet know as if you did. Instead of hunting for the answer by trial, you name the unknown, write down every relation it must satisfy, and then rearrange that statement by fixed, reversible moves until the unknown is isolated. Around 820 AD in the House of Wisdom in Baghdad, al-Khwarizmi wrote the book that gave the field its name and its method: *al-Kitab al-mukhtasar fi hisab al-jabr wa'l-muqabala*. *Al-jabr* — restoration — meant moving a subtracted term to the other side by adding it to both; *al-muqabala* — balancing — meant cancelling equal terms. The word "algorithm" is his own name, Latinized.

Before al-Khwarizmi, problems we would call algebraic were solved case by case, each with its own trick, often disguised as geometry. His achievement was to treat the equation as an object in its own right and to reduce *every* linear and quadratic problem to one of six standard forms, each with a general recipe for its solution. That is the leap: not a clever answer to one puzzle but a procedure that dissolves a whole class of puzzles the same way every time. It made mathematics teachable and portable — a method rather than a collection of feats.

Algebra is the language every later quantitative science is written in. Logarithms are a statement about exponents; analytic geometry is the marriage of algebra to Euclid; calculus manipulates algebraic expressions for change; probability counts and weights outcomes algebraically. Two centuries of Islamic mathematicians extended it to cubic equations and to what we now call combinatorics, and when it reached Renaissance Europe it became the engine of the scientific revolution. Nearly every equation in this archive is a debt to the man whose name became "algorithm."
Versión mínima viable
The rules of al-jabr (restoration: add a quantity to both sides to clear a subtraction) and al-muqabala (balancing: cancel identical terms on opposite sides), applied to reduce any linear or quadratic problem to one of a few standard forms with a known solution.
