The metric system
A single, decimal, self-consistent system of measurement in which every unit is a power of ten of the next and the base units are drawn from nature rather than from a ruler's body. One measure of length, chosen once, generates units of area, volume, and mass — the same everywhere, for anyone, forever.

The metre was defined as one ten-millionth of the distance from the North Pole to the Equator along the meridian through Paris. To find it, Delambre and Méchain spent seven years (1792–1798) triangulating the arc from Dunkirk to Barcelona, straight through a revolution and its wars. Méchain, tormented by a discrepancy he found in his own Barcelona latitudes, concealed the error — and the metre we have used ever since is about 0.2 millimetres shorter than the length he was actually hunting for.

The metric system is measurement made rational and universal. Its two ideas are simple. First, everything is decimal: a kilometre is a thousand metres, a metre a hundred centimetres, a centimetre ten millimetres — so you convert between units by moving a decimal point, never by memorizing that a mile is 1,760 yards or a pound is 16 ounces. Second, the units are *linked and natural*. You fix one base unit of length, the metre, against a feature of the Earth; from it you get area (square metre) and volume (the litre, a cube a tenth of a metre on a side); and from volume you get mass (the kilogram, originally the mass of one litre of water). Choose length once, and the rest of the system falls out by geometry and powers of ten. A regular set of prefixes — kilo, centi, milli — names every scale.

Before it, measurement was local chaos. On the eve of the French Revolution, an estimated quarter of a million distinct units were in use across France: the same-named *livre* or *pinte* or *lieue* meant different amounts a day's ride apart, differing not just town to town but trade to trade. That fragmentation was a standing tax on honesty — it hid fraud, snarled commerce, and made a measurement taken in one place meaningless in another. Worse, the standards were owned: a unit was the length of some authority's forearm or the weight of some guild's reference, and whoever held the standard held power over every transaction that used it. The metric system attacked both problems at once. It made units convert trivially, and it drew the base standard from the Earth — a thing no king or guild could own, and which, its designers hoped, "for all people, for all time" anyone could reconstruct.

The metric system became the language of science and, eventually, of almost all of world trade — the shared grid on which measurements from different labs, factories, and countries can be compared and combined at all. Interchangeable parts, international engineering, and reproducible experiments all assume that a metre here is a metre there. Its deepest move was philosophical: units should rest on nature, not on artifacts held by an authority. That ambition reached its end in 2019, when the last physical standard was retired and the kilogram was redefined in terms of the Planck constant — so that today the metre and the kilogram are defined by unchanging constants of the universe, reconstructible from first principles by anyone, anywhere, with no master copy to guard, exactly as 1795 dreamed.

Pick one base unit of length and fix it against something anyone could in principle reproduce; define area and volume as its square and cube; define a unit of mass as the mass of a fixed volume of water; and make every larger and smaller unit a power of ten, named by a regular set of prefixes. France's 1795 system — metre, litre (a cubic decimetre), kilogram (the mass of a litre of water) — is the original.
