Newcomen's 1712 engine converted around or below one percent of its coal's energy into useful work — so hungry that it was most economical at coal mines, where fuel was nearly free, though mines with no other way to stay dry ran it even where coal was dear. Even so, it pumped water around the clock like a tireless team of horses, and it was the first practical machine ever to turn fire into sustained motion.
Qué es
A steam engine boils water into steam and uses the steam's push — or, in Newcomen's original, the vacuum left when steam is condensed — to drive a piston back and forth. A beam or crank converts that reciprocation into pumping or rotation. It is a heat engine: chemical energy in fuel becomes heat, heat becomes pressure difference, pressure becomes work.

Every earlier power source was tied to a place or a body — streams for water wheels, wind for sails and mills, muscle for everything else. The steam engine delivered large, continuous power anywhere fuel could be carted, in any weather, at any hour. Its first job was self-reinforcing: Thomas Newcomen's engine of 1712, erected at a colliery near Dudley, pumped floodwater from coal mines, and deeper mines yielded more coal to feed more engines.

Newcomen's atmospheric engine used a brass or iron cylinder — cast and bored by the era's improving iron trade — fed with steam from a simple boiler; a jet of cold water condensed the steam, and atmospheric pressure pushed the piston down against the vacuum, rocking a great wooden beam that drove mine pumps. James Watt's separate condenser, patented in 1769, kept the cylinder permanently hot and the condenser permanently cold, cutting fuel consumption by roughly three-quarters. Watt and Matthew Boulton's later rotative engines, with crank and governor, turned steam from a pump into a driver of machinery.

Steam freed factories from riverbanks, then put itself on wheels and hulls: the railway and the steamship collapsed distance across continents and oceans. Trying to understand why engines wasted heat gave birth to thermodynamics, the physics of energy itself. Above all, steam opened the fossil-fuel era — the shift from living muscle and flowing water to buried sunlight that defines the industrial world.
