A vacuum tube is a glass envelope pumped empty of air, in which a heated filament boils electrons off into the vacuum and a positively charged plate collects them — a one-way valve for electric current. The triode adds a third element, a fine wire grid suspended between filament and plate: a small voltage on that grid throttles the far larger current reaching the plate, so a whisper of a signal controls a shout of power. Nothing moves but the electrons, and they cross the gap at nearly the speed of light.

It was the first device in which electricity controlled electricity with no moving parts — amplification, oscillation, and switching at electronic speed. Radio, long-distance telephony, radar, and the first electronic computers all ran on banks of glowing tubes. For forty years the triode and its cousins were the only way to make a faint signal strong or to flip a circuit on and off fast enough to compute, and the whole craft of circuit design was built around them long before any transistor existed.

Edison sealed an extra electrode into one of his lamps in 1883, saw a mysterious current cross the vacuum in one direction only, patented this "Edison effect" as a curiosity and moved on; John Ambrose Fleming turned the same effect into a practical radio detector, the two-element Fleming valve, in 1904. In 1906 Lee de Forest slipped a zigzag grid wire between filament and plate to make the three-element Audion — the first electronic amplifier — though it steadied into a reliable device only once engineers learned to pull a hard, gas-free vacuum with mercury pumps and getters and to assemble the tiny electrodes with real precision.
