Ørsted had chased a link between electricity and magnetism for two years when, demonstrating to students in 1820, he saw a compass needle swing sideways as he closed a battery circuit — not toward the wire, but crosswise around it.
Ce que c'est
Electromagnetism is the discovery that an electric current produces a magnetic field — that electricity and magnetism, studied as two separate mysteries for centuries, are two faces of one force. On 21 April 1820 the Danish physicist Hans Christian Ørsted ran current from a voltaic pile through a wire near a compass and watched the needle swing to sit *perpendicular* to the wire — not toward it or away, but crosswise, as if the wire were wrapped in invisible circular loops of magnetic force. It was the first hard proof that moving charge and magnetism are the same phenomenon.
Pourquoi cela a compté
This is the bridge between electricity and mechanical force, and it runs in both directions. Before Ørsted a current could only be sensed as a shock or a chemical reaction; after him, current became something that could push, pull, and turn a magnet — and, run backward a decade later, motion and magnetism could be made to generate current. Everything that spins on electricity, and everything that makes electricity by spinning, begins at this single twitch of a needle.
Comment cela a été fait
The apparatus was almost nothing: a battery, a length of wire, and an ordinary compass. The discovery was in reading the *direction* — the needle turned sideways, which meant the force circled the wire rather than pulling in a straight line, overturning every prior assumption about how magnets behaved. Contrary to the well-worn legend of a lucky accident mid-lecture, Ørsted had been hunting this connection since 1818 out of a conviction that nature's forces were unified; he simply recognized the effect the moment it appeared, and announced it in a four-page Latin pamphlet circulated across Europe in July 1820.
Ce que cela a débloqué
Within a year the effect had become both an instrument and an engine: the galvanometer, which measures a current by how far it deflects a needle, and — after William Sturgeon wrapped wire around iron in 1824 — the electromagnet. André-Marie Ampère turned Ørsted's observation into a quantitative force law within months, and from that foundation came Faraday's spinning wire of 1821, the electric motor, the telegraph, and ultimately the generator and the grid. It is the hinge on which the entire electrical age turns.
