Lime

Common limestone roasted in a hot fire becomes quicklime — a caustic white solid that, slaked with water and mixed with sand, hardens back into stone as mortar, plaster, and whitewash.

Lime mortar sets by breathing. The kiln drives carbon dioxide out of the rock; the finished mortar then spends years reabsorbing that same gas from the air, chemically turning back into limestone right there in the wall. A lime-mortared building is rock, dissolved by fire and re-formed in place.

Lime is among chemistry's first manufactured reagents: heat ordinary limestone to a bright orange glow and it sheds carbon dioxide, leaving quicklime — a substance that reacts violently with water, releasing enough heat to make the mixture boil. The slaked result is a smooth alkaline putty that can be spread, molded, and painted, and that slowly hardens back into artificial stone.

Lime is the binder that made masonry stick. Mortar turned stacked stones and bricks into walls that hold together; plaster gave houses smooth, washable, waterproof floors and surfaces nine thousand years ago — at sites like 'Ain Ghazal in Jordan, whole floors and even statues were built of it before pottery reached the region. Whitewash disinfected homes and dairies; spread on fields, lime sweetens acid soil. One kiln product served builders, farmers, tanners, and eventually chemists.

Break limestone (or chalk, or heaps of seashells) into fist-size lumps, stack them in a pit with several times their bulk in fuel, and burn the whole thing hard for a day or more. The white, crumbly lumps that remain are quicklime, which is then slaked — added carefully to water, where it boils and collapses into putty — and mixed with sand for use. The method scaled from farm pits to the continuous kilns that supplied Rome.

Mortared masonry made large, durable architecture possible, from city walls to aqueducts; Roman builders extended lime with volcanic ash into concrete. Lime became an industrial input everywhere: flux in iron smelting and a stabilizer in glassmaking, the causticizing agent that strengthened lye for early soap and a dehairing agent in leather tanning, the treatment (nixtamalization) that unlocks the nutrition in maize. It is the trailhead of industrial chemistry — one of the first substances humans made in bulk by deliberately breaking a chemical bond, alongside gypsum plaster.

  1. 01Break the limestone into lumps no bigger than a fist.
  2. 02Stack alternating layers of fuel and stone in the pit or kiln, starting with a thick fuel bed at the bottom.
  3. 03Light it and keep it burning fiercely for a full day or more — the stones must glow orange throughout, not just at the surface.
  4. 04Let everything cool, then pick out the lumps that have turned light, chalk-white, and crumbly: this is quicklime. Handle it with care; it burns skin and eyes.
  5. 05Slake it promptly: add the quicklime to a generous volume of water — never trickle water onto a mass of lime. It will hiss, steam, and boil violently, then collapse into a smooth white putty. Keep your face and eyes well away from the rising steam and shield them — slaking steam and caustic spatter can cause permanent eye damage.
  6. 06Leave the putty to mature under a film of water for days to months — the longer the better — then mix roughly one part putty to three parts sand for mortar or plaster.

Well-burned lime reacts hard the moment it meets water — hissing, steaming, swelling into putty. Lumps that sit inert were underburned stone, or quicklime already spoiled by damp air.

  • Underburning — cores never convert and will not slake; they stay dead stone.
  • Careless slaking — the boiling caustic mixture splashes and inflicts serious burns.
  • Storing quicklime uncovered — it quietly takes up moisture and CO2 from the air and turns useless.
  • Using mortar with unslaked lumps in it — they swell later and pop the face off the finished wall.
