The earliest recorded chemical reaction we know of is a soap recipe on a Sumerian clay tablet (~2500 BC) — oil heated with wood ash — and archaeological evidence of soap-making in Babylon goes back to ~2800 BC. Yet doctors did not routinely wash their hands until the late 1800s, and Ignaz Semmelweis was ridiculed and later committed to an asylum after arguing they should.

Soap is the product of saponification: fat reacts with a strong alkali (lye) to form molecules with a water-loving end and a fat-loving end. Those molecules surround grease, oil, and grime — and the fatty coats of many microbes — and let plain water rinse them away. It is cleaning by chemistry, not just by scrubbing.

Its full impact was delayed for millennia because no one understood why washing helped.   1. 01Before handling lye, protect yourself: cover your skin, shield your eyes, work in open air away from your face, and keep children and animals away. Lye and boiling lye burn deeply, and a splash in the eye can blind — flood any splash with plenty of water at once and keep flooding.
  2. 02Pack hardwood ashes into a barrel and pour soft water slowly through them, collecting the brown liquid (lye) that drips out below.
  3. 03Test the lye: it should float a fresh egg so a coin-sized patch shows above the surface. If it sinks, pour the lye through fresh ashes again.
  4. 04Melt the fat with a little water, strain out any solids, and let the clean fat set on top; lift it off.
  5. 05Combine the lye and melted fat in a heavy pot over low heat.
  6. 06Stir constantly for one to several hours as the mixture thickens to a pudding-like 'trace' that no longer separates.
  7. 07Keep heating gently until it turns glossy and paste-like and stops feeling greasy.
  8. 08Stir in salt or a little more lye if it stays oily, then pour into molds or keep as soft soap.
  9. 09Cure the bars in dry air for days to weeks before using.

Finished soap lathers in water and no longer feels greasy. To test for leftover lye, touch only a small, well-hardened piece briefly to the tip of the tongue and spit and rinse at once — a sharp tingle ('zap') means unreacted lye remains, so cure it longer or rework it, and do not retest until then.

  • Too much or too strong lye — the soap stays caustic and chemically burns skin and eyes. Never let raw lye touch bare skin; rinse splashes with plenty of water.
  • Too little or too weak lye — a greasy mush that never sets into soap.
  • Overheating boils the caustic mix over the pot, splashing lye on skin and surroundings.
