As a young student at Louvain, Vesalius spotted the body of an executed criminal hanging on a roadside gibbet, half-picked by birds. He came back after dark, climbed up, and stole the bones piece by piece over several nights to assemble the first known articulated human skeleton for teaching — then told everyone he had brought it with him from Paris.

It sounds obvious that you would learn this by opening a body and looking, but for roughly thirteen centuries European medicine instead recited the anatomy of the second-century physician Galen — who had never legally dissected a human and worked mostly from Barbary apes, pigs, and dogs. Anatomy as a science begins when someone trusts the corpse in front of them over the revered book.

Andreas Vesalius, teaching at Padua in the 1530s, broke the ritual in which a professor read Galen aloud from a high chair while a hired barber-surgeon did the cutting. Vesalius did the cutting himself, with his own hands in the body, and found Galen wrong in more than two hundred particulars — the human jaw is a single bone, not two; the breastbone has three segments, not seven; there is no *rete mirabile* network at the base of the human brain; the septum between the heart's chambers is solid, with no pores for blood to seep through. In 1543 he published *De Humani Corporis Fabrica*, over 700 pages with more than 200 meticulous woodcut illustrations, each printable identically in every copy. The book's authority came not from Vesalius's word but from pictures any reader could check against a body of their own.

Accurate anatomy is the floor beneath the rest of medicine. William Harvey could not have traced the circulation of the blood without it; surgery could not become precise without it; physiology and pathology are the study of how the mapped parts work and fail. Just as important, the *Fabrica* was a public demonstration of the method that would define science: not "Galen says," but "look for yourself, here is the picture, check it."
