Cheap Steel (Bessemer Process)

The first process to make steel in bulk: blow cold air straight through molten iron and let the impurities burn themselves out.

The Bessemer converter uses no fuel at all. Blowing cold air through molten iron makes it hotter, not colder — the carbon and silicon impurities are themselves the fuel, and they burn out in a twenty-minute eruption of flame.

A pear-shaped, refractory-lined vessel that converts brittle pig iron into steel by blowing air through the molten metal. Impurities oxidize and leave as gas and slag; their combustion keeps the melt liquid with zero external fuel.

Before 1856, steel was a semi-precious material made ounces at a time; a ton of it cost months of skilled labor. Bessemer's converter made five tons in half an hour. Cheap steel is the load-bearing material of modernity — rails, ships, bridges, skyscrapers, and every machine tool that makes other machines.

  1. 01Tilt the converter horizontal and charge it with molten pig iron.
  2. 02Start the air blast BEFORE righting the vessel (or metal pours into the tuyeres).
  3. 03Right the converter. Silicon and manganese burn first: brown smoke, moderate flame.
  4. 04Carbon burns next: a roaring white flame several metres long. This is the 'blow' — 15–20 minutes.
  5. 05When the flame suddenly drops and shortens, the carbon is exhausted. Stop the blast and tilt immediately.
  6. 06Add measured spiegeleisen to restore the exact carbon content wanted, then pour.

The flame itself is the instrument: its color and collapse tell you the carbon state. Good steel from the pour forges without crumbling, and a hardened-and-quenched offcut snaps with a fine, silky gray grain rather than a coarse glittering one.

  • Over-blowing after the flame drops → burnt, oxygen-riddled brittle metal.
  • Phosphorus-rich ore → 'cold-short' steel that shatters; the acid lining cannot remove phosphorus. Fixed only in 1878 by the Thomas basic (limestone) lining.
