Glassblowing collapsed the cost of glass almost overnight. A core-formed or cast vessel took a skilled worker days; a blower could inflate a cup or bottle in minutes. Invented by Syrian craftsmen on the Levantine coast around the middle of the 1st century BC, it spread across the Roman world so fast that within a century glass drinking cups were cheap enough for ordinary households — the first cheap, mass-produced glass containers in history.

Glassblowing exploits the one property that makes glass unlike stone or metal: as it heats it does not suddenly melt but softens gradually, passing through a long taffy-like range where it is stiff enough to hold a shape yet soft enough to stretch. Gather a blob of that hot glass on the end of a hollow pipe, blow into the pipe, and the trapped breath inflates the blob from the inside into a thin-walled hollow bubble — which you then shape into a cup, bottle, or flask by turning, swinging, and rolling before it cools and sets rigid.

Before blowing, every glass vessel was built up slowly — trailed around a removable clay core, or cast and ground — so glass was a luxury for the wealthy. The blowpipe let one worker make a hollow vessel in minutes from a single gather, and let walls be made far thinner, using less of the costly melt per piece. The result was the first cheap, mass-produced glass containers: bottles, cups, jars, and window panes that ordinary Romans could own. A material prized like a gemstone became, within a couple of generations, common household ware.

Blown flasks, retorts, and tubing became the standard apparatus of alchemy and then chemistry — transparent, inert containers you can watch a reaction inside. Nearly every later instrument that extends human sight or contains a chemical reaction descends from a worker inflating a bubble of molten sand.

- 01Preheat the pipe's tip, then dip it into the molten glass and turn it to wind a gather onto the end, like honey on a spoon.
- 02Roll the gather on the marver to center it and even out its skin, keeping the pipe turning constantly so gravity does not pull the soft glass off-axis.
- 03Blow a steady, gentle breath into the pipe to open a bubble inside the gather; cap the mouthpiece with your tongue between breaths to hold the air in as it expands.
- 04Reheat at the furnace mouth whenever the glass stiffens, and shape by blowing, swinging to stretch, rolling on the marver, and pinching with tools.
- 05Transfer the piece to a pontil rod to free the pipe end, then finish and open the rim with shears and tools.
- 06Crack the finished piece off the pontil and set it at once into the annealing oven; cool it slowly over hours so locked-in stress does not shatter it.

A good blown vessel has even, thin walls with no unmelted grains or big trapped bubbles, holds water without weeping, and rings when tapped. The real test is survival: a properly annealed piece stays sound, while one cooled too fast will craze or spring apart, sometimes hours or days later.
