In 1761-62, John Harrison's sea-watch H4 sailed from England to Jamaica and lost only about five seconds in 81 days — a mechanical heartbeat so steady it fixed a ship's longitude at sea, cracking a navigation problem that had defeated astronomers for generations and killed sailors by the thousands.

The heart of every mechanical clock is the escapement: a device that blocks a turning wheel, lets one tooth escape, blocks it again — converting the continuous pull of a falling weight into discrete, equal, countable ticks. The earliest form, the verge and foliot, appeared in Europe around 1300; everything else in the clock is just gearing to count the ticks and hands or bells to report the total.

A clock makes time a shared public coordinate instead of a private guess from the sun. Tower clocks striking equal hours reorganized towns — markets, work shifts, prayers, and courts could all be synchronized, in any weather, day or night. Equal hours displaced the old seasonal hours that stretched and shrank with daylight, and time discipline became infrastructure: the quiet operating system of commercial and industrial life.

The first clocks were blacksmith's work: a wrought-iron frame, hand-cut gears, a stone or metal weight on a rope drum, and a verge escapement whose swinging foliot bar was tuned by sliding small weights along it. They drifted by many minutes a day and were corrected against the sun. Huygens's pendulum (1656) cut the error to seconds, and Harrison's marine chronometers made the beat portable and sea-proof.

An accurate portable clock solved longitude: compare local noon with the time back home, and every hour of difference is fifteen degrees of the globe — so precise navigation became a matter of carrying time in a box. Clockmakers, cutting tiny accurate gears, became the seed craft of precision engineering and instrument making. And timed measurement — of pulses, pendulums, falling bodies, and star transits — turned rates into numbers, which is much of what modern experimental science is.
