Chinese court records credit the official Cai Lun with reporting paper to Emperor He in 105 AD, made from mulberry bark, hemp waste, worn rags, and old fishing nets. His genius was not a new plant but a new idea: any cellulose trash could be smashed back into fiber and re-formed as a sheet. Six and a half centuries later, papermakers taken prisoner at the Battle of Talas in 751 AD are said to have carried the craft west into the Islamic world, and a paper mill rose at Samarkand.

Paper is a sheet felted from loose plant fiber. Almost any cellulose — bark, rags, rope, straw — can be rotted, boiled, and pounded until it separates into individual fibers suspended in water. Dip a fine screen into that slurry, lift it flat, and a thin layer of fibers strands across the screen as the water drains away; those fibers, pressed and dried, tangle and bond into a single flat sheet. It is manufactured, not grown: unlike papyrus (a plant sliced and layered) or parchment (an animal skin scraped thin), paper can be made from waste, in any size, anywhere there is fiber and water.

Before paper, writing rode on expensive or awkward surfaces: silk was costly, bamboo and wood strips were bulky enough that a single book could fill a cart, papyrus grew only in Egypt, and parchment took a herd of animals to fill a library. Paper was cheap, light, foldable, and made from rubbish. That collapse in the cost of a writing surface is what let records, contracts, literature, and eventually printing spread to ordinary people rather than just palaces and temples. When the printing press arrived over a thousand years later, it needed a cheap surface to print on — and paper was already waiting.

Press the wet mats to drive out water, peel them apart, and dry them flat; a wash of starch or gelatin sizes the surface so ink writes clean. (See recipe.) The decisive, easily-missed step is the beating: paper's strength comes not from the plant but from fraying the fibers so thoroughly that they interlock as they dry.

Cheap paper made bulk record-keeping, bureaucracy, and correspondence practical, then made mass printing economical; the two together drove the explosion of books, newspapers, money, and paperwork that runs the modern world. It also became the substrate of banking and money-and-trade — banknotes, cheques, ledgers, contracts — and of science and law, which depend on the cheap, durable, copyable page. Nearly every institution that runs on the written word runs on this one felted mat of pounded fiber.

  1. 01Cut the rags or bark small and ret (rot) them in water for days to loosen the fibers; boil them with wood-ash lye to dissolve gums and free the cellulose.
  2. 02Pound the softened stock in water — a mortar, stamp, or beater — until it breaks down into individual fibers and the water turns milky. This beating, not the plant, is what makes strong paper.
  3. 03Stir the pulp into a vat of clean water until the fibers float evenly suspended.
  4. 04Dip the screen mould into the vat and lift it level: a thin film of fibers settles on the screen as the water drains through. A gentle shake locks the fibers into a felted mat.
  5. 05Couch the wet sheet off the screen onto a cloth; stack sheets between cloths and press hard to squeeze the water out.
  6. 06Peel the damp sheets apart and dry them flat — pressed on smooth boards or brushed onto a warm wall — then optionally size the surface with starch or gelatin so ink will not feather.

A good sheet is thin, even against the light with no thick clots or thin holes, strong enough that a dry sheet does not tear under its own weight, and it takes ink in a crisp line without the ink bleeding into a fuzzy blot. Held to a lamp, a well-formed sheet shows a uniform cloudless field of fiber.

起こりうる失敗

  • Fiber underbeaten — the sheet is weak and crumbly, because the fibers never frayed enough to interlock.
  • Pulp too thick or unevenly stirred — lumpy sheets with clots and thin spots.
  • Lifting the mould crooked or letting it drain unevenly — the sheet forms thick on one edge and falls apart on the other.
  • No sizing — ink spreads and soaks through, useless for writing though fine for wrapping.
