Photography

Light-sensitive chemistry married to a lens: a camera projects a scene onto a coated plate whose compound changes exactly where light strikes, and a second chemical step washes away the unchanged parts and makes the image permanent. For the first time, a picture drew itself.

Nicéphore Niépce's "View from the Window at Le Gras," made on a pewter plate thinly coated with bitumen of Judea around 1826–1827, needed an exposure of at least eight hours — some accounts say days — of summer sunlight, so long that the sun lit both sides of the courtyard in the finished image. It is the oldest surviving photograph made in a camera, and it still exists, at the Harry Ransom Center in Austin, Texas.

A photograph is a chemical record of a light image. A lens throws a focused, upside-down picture of the world onto a surface coated with a compound — historically a silver halide such as silver iodide — that is changed by light. Bright parts of the scene alter more of the compound; dark parts leave it untouched. A second chemical step, development, amplifies that faint change into a visible metallic-silver image, and a third step, fixing, dissolves away everything that was not exposed so the picture will no longer react to light. Nothing is drawn by hand; the scene draws itself, in proportion to how much light each point sent.

Until 1826 the only way to keep an image of a place, a face, or an event was for a skilled human to draw or paint it — slow, expensive, and filtered through a person's hand and memory. Photography made an exact, automatic, repeatable image that no one had to be able to draw. It turned seeing into a record: faces of the dead, distant cities, the surface of the moon, the tracks of particles, the moment of a galloping horse's stride. It democratized memory, and it gave science a witness that did not blink or embellish.

Photography is the parent of an entire branch of civilization's memory: motion pictures (a fast run of stills), X-ray and medical imaging, astronomical and spectroscopic plates that turned light into data, aerial reconnaissance, the printed illustrated press, and forensic and documentary evidence. The light-sensitive-plate idea also seeded photolithography — printing patterns with light — which is how integrated circuits are made. When the silver plate was finally replaced by an electronic sensor, the digital camera inherited the same geometry Niépce started with: a lens, and a surface that remembers where the light fell.

実用最小限の形

A glass plate flowed with salted collodion, dipped in a silver-nitrate bath so light-sensitive silver iodide forms throughout the film, exposed while still wet in a camera, then developed at once with iron sulfate and fixed in hyposulphite of soda — the wet-plate negative.

  • · Salted collodion: plain collodion (nitrocellulose dissolved in ether and alcohol) with a few grams of potassium iodide and potassium bromide per 100 ml
  • · A 9% silver-nitrate sensitizing bath (about 100 g silver nitrate dissolved in 1 litre of distilled water)
  • · Iron developer: ~4 g ferrous (iron) sulfate, ~6 ml acetic acid and a splash of alcohol in 100 ml water
  • · Fixer: a solution of hyposulphite of soda (sodium thiosulfate) — plain 'hypo'
  • · A light-tight camera with a lens, and a darkroom lit only by dim red or amber light

手順

  1. 01From the moment silver touches the plate, work under red or amber safelight only: silver halide is blind to red but is ruined by daylight.
  2. 02Flow the salted collodion evenly across the clean glass, tilting to drain the excess, and let it set to a tacky, oily-looking film.
  3. 03Immerse the coated plate in the silver-nitrate bath for a few minutes; the silver reacts with the potassium iodide and bromide to form silver iodide and silver bromide — the light-sensitive salts — held in the collodion film.
  4. 04In the dark, load the still-wet plate into the camera and expose it to the projected image: seconds in bright sun, minutes in shade. Where light lands it builds an invisible 'latent image.'
  5. 05Immediately, before the collodion dries, pour the iron-sulfate developer across the plate. A metallic silver image rises out of the milky film within seconds; flood with water the instant it looks right to stop development.
  6. 06Fix: bathe the plate in hyposulphite of soda until every trace of the unexposed, creamy silver halide dissolves away, leaving the silver image clear against the glass.
  7. 07Wash thoroughly in running water, dry gently, and varnish the surface — the collodion film is fragile.

A good plate carries a sharp, full-toned image (a negative on clear glass; a positive if backed with black). The real test is permanence: set the finished, fixed plate face-up in daylight — it must not darken further, because fixing has removed all remaining light-sensitive halide. An image that keeps darkening or fogs uniformly grey was never fully fixed.

起こりうる失敗

  • Silver nitrate is caustic, stains skin and everything else black, and strong solutions burn the eyes. Never substitute a potassium-cyanide fixer casually — it is a deadly poison that releases lethal gas if it meets acid; use hypo.
  • Collodion is dissolved in ether and alcohol, both extremely flammable — the heavy vapour also dulls and sickens in a closed room. Flow and pour plates only with good ventilation and never near an open flame, spark, or hot lamp.
  • Any stray white light before development fogs the whole plate to a useless grey.
  • Letting the collodion dry before you develop — the wet plate has minutes, not hours; a dried film goes insensitive and will not take the developer.
  • A weak or exhausted silver bath, or too little iodide in the collodion — a thin, faint, low-contrast image.
  • Skipping or shortening the fix — the picture looks fine at first, then slowly stains over and fades away as leftover halide reacts to light.
