Analytic geometry
The fusion of algebra and geometry: give the plane coordinates, and every curve becomes an equation while every equation becomes a curve. Shape can then be computed, and calculation can be seen.

The founding text of analytic geometry was buried as an unlabelled 100-page appendix to a philosophy book — Descartes' Discours de la méthode of 1637 — and Descartes wrote it deliberately obscurely. He closed it by saying he had left much out on purpose, hoping "to leave to others the pleasure of discovery." He wrote it in French, not scholarly Latin, partly to keep the learned establishment out.

Analytic geometry lays a grid over space so that position becomes number. Pick two perpendicular axes; then every point is a pair of coordinates (x, y), every curve is the collection of points satisfying some equation, and every equation draws a curve. A straight line is an equation of the first degree; a circle, ellipse, parabola, and hyperbola are the second-degree equations. René Descartes published the founding treatment, *La Géométrie*, in 1637, and Pierre de Fermat arrived at essentially the same idea independently around the same time, circulating it in manuscript rather than in print.

For two thousand years, since Euclid, geometry had been done with straightedge, compass, and figures, and it was brilliant but ad hoc — each problem demanded its own inspired construction. Descartes' move converts geometric questions into algebraic ones you can grind out by rule: to find where two curves cross, solve their equations together; to prove a property of all parabolas, manipulate the equation. Conversely it lets abstract algebra be *seen* — an equation acquires a shape. This two-way traffic between picture and formula is the habit of mind behind all of modern mathematics and physics.

This node is the direct parent of calculus. Once a curve is an equation, its tangent line and the area beneath it become algebraic quantities you can attack — which is exactly what Newton and Leibniz did a generation later. Coordinates also gave physics its stage: a moving body traces a curve in a coordinate space of position against time, so motion itself became something to compute. Every graph, every plotted function, every coordinate system in engineering, navigation, and computer graphics descends from the grid Descartes hid in the back of a book about method.

Two axes crossing at right angles, every point named by its pair of distances (x, y), and the rule that a curve is exactly the set of points whose coordinates satisfy a chosen equation — so a straight line is a first-degree equation and a circle a second-degree one.
