Atomic theory

The claim that every element is made of identical atoms with a fixed weight, and that compounds form when those atoms join in whole-number ratios — which is why elements always combine in the same definite proportions by mass.

✦ Espere, sério?

John Dalton, who founded the theory, was colour-blind — the condition was called Daltonism after him. He willed his own eyes to be examined after death to find the cause; they were dissected the day after he died in 1844 and, wrongly, found clear. Nearly the answer waited in the preserved tissue: in 1995, DNA from one eyeball showed he lacked the gene for the green-sensitive photopigment.

O que é

Atomic theory says the differences between substances come down to differences between a few kinds of tiny, indivisible particles. Every atom of a given element is alike and has a characteristic weight; atoms are neither created nor destroyed in a reaction, only shuffled; and compounds are atoms of different elements locked together in fixed, whole-number counts — one of this to two of that. From those few rules, the messy behavior of matter becomes arithmetic.

Por que importou

The idea of atoms was ancient, but it had always been philosophy — untestable, and no help in the lab. Dalton's contribution was to make it quantitative and useful. If tin and oxygen form two different oxides, and the oxygen combines in a ratio of exactly 1 to 2 by weight between them, that is a strange coincidence unless matter comes in discrete lumps. This law of multiple proportions turned atoms from a hunch into the best explanation of hard measurements, and gave chemists the first table of relative atomic weights — a scale for weighing the invisible.

O que desbloqueou

Chemical formulas and balanced equations, and the whole predictive machinery of chemistry. Once elements have fixed atomic weights, you can line them up by weight and look for pattern — which is the periodic table. Atomic theory is also the trunk from which molecular structure, the kinetic theory of gases, and ultimately the physics of the atom itself all branch.

Versão mínima viável

Measure the masses that combine in a set of compounds of the same two elements. If the ratios always come out as small whole-number multiples of one another, the simplest explanation is that matter comes in indivisible units — atoms — that combine in fixed counts.
