Blood typing
The discovery that human blood comes in distinct, inherited types whose serums clump one another's red cells — so a transfusion between mismatched people can be fatal, while one between matched people is safe. Karl Landsteiner found the ABO system in Vienna in 1901, turning transfusion from a lethal gamble into a routine that works.

Landsteiner uncovered the rule that makes transfusion survivable using little more than the blood in the room. In 1901 he drew samples from himself and five colleagues in his Vienna laboratory, mixed each man's serum against every other man's red cells, and read the grid of which combinations clumped. From six people's blood he deduced the groups A, B, and O. The fourth and rarest, AB, he missed — his students von Decastello and Sturli found it the next year.

Human red blood cells carry inherited markers on their surface — the A marker, the B marker, both, or neither (group O). The blood serum carries antibodies against whichever markers a person lacks. Put incompatible blood together and those antibodies latch onto the foreign cells and clot them into clumps; inside a living body that reaction can be lethal. Blood typing is simply reading which group a person belongs to, so donor and recipient can be matched.

Transfusion had been tried for centuries and killed unpredictably — sometimes it saved a bleeding patient, sometimes it triggered a fatal reaction, and no one could say why. Landsteiner's discovery explained the difference: the danger was not the act of transfusion but the mismatch. Once blood could be typed and matched, transfusion became a survivable, repeatable procedure rather than a desperate lottery. The same clumping test also gave early forensics and paternity work an objective tool.

Blood typing is what made blood banking, routine surgery, childbirth hemorrhage care, and battlefield medicine possible — every safe transfusion since rests on it. Landsteiner went further, co-discovering the Rhesus (Rh) factor in 1940, which explained a dangerous incompatibility between mother and fetus. The broader lesson — that human tissues carry individual identity markers the immune system polices — became the foundation of transplant matching and modern immunology.
