✦ Espere, sério?

Around 2600 BC the Indus city of Mohenjo-daro gave ordinary houses private toilets connected to covered brick street sewers — a standard of urban sanitation that most of Europe would not match again until the 1800s.

O que é

Sanitation is the systematic separation of human waste from the water and food people consume. At its core it is a barrier: keep excreta contained and away from drinking water, and the fecal-oral diseases that ride in waste cannot reach new hosts. Drains, latrines, sewers, and treatment plants all serve this one principle.

Por que importou

Waterborne diseases — cholera, typhoid, dysentery — were among the greatest killers in dense settlements. Sanitation broke the transmission chain and, more than any drug, drove the collapse in death rates that made large cities survivable. London's cholera epidemics ended not through medicine but through sewers built after the Great Stink of 1858.

Como foi feito

The Indus civilization laid covered brick drains along its streets and connected household latrines to them around 2600 BC. Simpler communities dug pit latrines sited downhill and far from wells, covering the waste with lime or ash to suppress flies and odor. The essential discipline was always the same: waste flows away from, never toward, the water people drink.

O que desbloqueou

Reliable sanitation is what lets humans live packed together by the millions without perpetual epidemics. It made the modern city possible and, alongside clean water supply, drove much of the collapse in urban death rates. Sewage treatment, safe water supply, and much of public-health engineering grew directly from it.

Versão mínima viável

Dig a covered pit latrine downhill and far from any well, treat the waste with lime or ash, and keep drinking water sourced uphill of it.

Receita de arranque

Você precisa de

  • · A shovel or digging tools
  • · A site well away from and downhill of every well, spring, or stream
  • · Lime (quicklime or slaked lime) for treatment
  • · A cover slab with a lidded hole
  • · Loose soil or ash for daily covering

Passos

  1. 01Choose a spot at least 30 meters (100 ft) from any water source, and lower in the ground than it; in sandy, cracked, rocky, or high-water-table ground, increase this distance substantially — some guidelines call for 75 m — and when in doubt, site farther.
  2. 02Dig the pit deep — at least 2 to 3 meters — but keep its bottom at least 1.5 to 2 meters above the highest level the water table ever reaches; in wet or high-table ground, dig a shallower pit rather than reach the water.
  3. 03Set a platform or slab over the pit with a single hole and a tight-fitting lid to keep flies out.
  4. 04After each use, sprinkle a scoop of lime, ash, or soil over the waste to cut flies and smell.
  5. 05Draw and store all drinking and washing water from a source uphill of the pit, never below it.
  6. 06When the pit fills to within about half a meter of the top, cover it with lime and soil and dig a fresh one nearby.
  7. 07Wash hands with soap and clean water after every visit.

Como saber que funcionou

Water drawn from the nearest well stays clear, odorless, and does not cause illness, and no seepage or drainage runs from the pit toward any water source. Recurring stomach illness in the community means the barrier is failing.

O que dá errado

  • Pit sited too close to or uphill of a well — sewage seeps into drinking water and spreads cholera or typhoid, which can be lethal at scale.
  • Pit dug into the water table — waste contaminates groundwater directly.
  • Quicklime handled carelessly — it is caustic and burns skin, eyes, and lungs; keep it dry and away from the body.
