In the first edition of Systema Naturae — a folio of barely a dozen pages — Linnaeus filed human beings under the order he called Anthropomorpha, in the same genus-level company as apes and sloths. A century before evolution offered any reason why, a naturalist had quietly catalogued Homo as one animal among the others, and drawn fierce objection for it.

Classification of life is a formal system for sorting organisms into a nested hierarchy — species grouped into genera, genera into orders, orders into classes, classes into kingdoms — and giving each species a fixed two-part Latin name: the genus, then the species, as in *Homo sapiens* or *Canis lupus*. Before it, the same plant might carry a different clumsy Latin phrase-name in every country and every book. Linnaeus's binomial names, applied consistently to plants in *Species Plantarum* (1753) and to animals in the tenth edition of *Systema Naturae* (1758), gave every living thing one address that everyone could use.

You cannot build a science of living things until you can agree on what you are talking about. A shared, stable naming system is the indexing layer beneath all of biology, agriculture, and medicine: it lets a botanist in Sweden and a collector in Java know they mean the same plant, lets a poison be told from its harmless look-alike, lets breeders and farmers track varieties. Just as importantly, the *act* of grouping organisms by shared traits laid out the pattern — the nested tree of resemblances — that would later demand an explanation. Darwin's tree of descent is, in a sense, an answer to the question Linnaeus's hierarchy posed.

Linnaeus, a Swedish physician and botanist, was a compulsive orderer of things. He set out rules for ranking organisms and for naming them, then applied them at industrial scale, personally naming many thousands of species of plants and animals and training students who fanned out across the world to collect more. His system was artificial in places — he sorted plants largely by their sexual parts, counting stamens and pistils, which was tidy but did not always reflect true kinship — yet its bookkeeping was so useful that it stuck. The decisive move was the two-word name: short, unique, and universal, replacing the sprawling descriptive Latin tags that had made cross-referencing nearly impossible.

Every later life science inherits the filing cabinet. Cell theory needed a catalogued diversity of organisms to generalize across; evolution needed the nested groupings to explain; heredity, ecology, epidemiology, and modern genomics all still hang their findings on Linnaean names and ranks. The convention that a newly discovered organism gets a binomial name and a place in the hierarchy is unbroken from 1753 to today — one of the longest-running working standards in all of science.
