Sound recording
Sound is a pattern of vibration in the air. Drag a stylus attached to a diaphragm across a moving surface while you speak and it scratches that pattern into the material; drag the stylus back through the same groove and it pushes the air in the same pattern again. For the first time, a moment of sound could be kept and replayed.

Seventeen years before Edison, a French printer named Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville recorded a human voice singing "Au clair de la lune" onto soot-blackened paper on 9 April 1860 — but his phonautograph had no way to play anything back; he only meant to study the shapes of sound. The tracings sat silent for 148 years, until 2008, when researchers at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory scanned the squiggles and turned them back into sound for the first time. The oldest recorded human voice was heard only in our century.

Sound recording captures the vibration of the air itself and stores it as a physical trace that can be read again. In Edison's phonograph the trace is a groove of varying depth or side-to-side wiggle, cut into tinfoil, then wax, then shellac, by a needle riding a diaphragm. To play it back you reverse the process: run the needle along the stored groove, let it shake the diaphragm, and the diaphragm pushes the air into a copy of the original sound. It is mechanical and requires no electricity at all — the energy of your voice does the writing, and the turning of the crank does the reading.

Every earlier communication technology moved a message from place to place; the phonograph moved it through *time*. A voice, a performance, a moment of music could outlive the instant it was made and be heard again, anywhere, indefinitely. It created recorded music as an industry and an art form, preserved languages and testimonies that would otherwise have vanished, and — with film — gave the twentieth century its shared memory. Scott de Martinville's device proved recording was possible in 1857–1860; Edison's leap in 1877 was realizing you could also *play it back*.

Sound recording founded the record and film-sound industries, radio's library of pre-recorded content, and the whole practice of documenting the audible world. It taught engineers to treat a signal as a waveform that can be stored on a medium and reconstructed — the direct conceptual ancestor of magnetic tape, the compact disc, and every digital audio file, all of which do the same thing Edison did: freeze a vibration, then set it moving again.

Edison's tinfoil cylinder: a sheet of tinfoil wrapped around a hand-cranked grooved metal drum. A mouthpiece diaphragm carries a needle that indents the foil as you speak and turn the crank; retrace the same needle over the dents and it revibrates the diaphragm, replaying the sound.
