When a trading ship sank off Uluburun, Turkey, around 1320 BC, its cargo included some 175 ingots of raw colored glass. Within about two centuries of the first glass vessels, raw glass was already a bulk export commodity of Bronze Age empires.

Distillation is written into everyday English as a fossil of the 9th-century labs that perfected it. "Alembic," the still's head, is the Arabic al-anbīq (from Greek ambix, a cup); "alcohol" is al-kuḥl — first the fine cosmetic powder kohl, later borrowed for the pure spirit the still drew off; even "alkali" and "alchemy" carry the same al-. Three of chemistry's most basic words are loanwords from one workshop.
Boiling a mixture and catching the vapor, so that the parts that boil easiest come off first and condense back to a purer liquid. Separation by temperature — it makes nothing new, it only sorts.
Boil a liquid and collect its vapors by weight, and you can split crude oil into its separate fractions — including one that is light, thin, and violently eager to burn.

1855 (Silliman's report); first commercial well 1859
In 1855, before a single oil well existed, the Yale chemist Benjamin Silliman Jr. distilled a bottle of Pennsylvania "rock oil" and reported that almost the whole sample could be boiled off into salable products — kerosene for lamps, solvents, lubricants, paraffin — with little waste. The report was commissioned to reassure nervous investors; it convinced them to drill, and four years later Drake struck oil at Titusville.
Boiling crude oil apart into fractions by temperature — light naphtha and gasoline, then kerosene, then heavy oils and tar — turning a black, useless seep into lamp fuel, lubricants, and eventually the fuel of the modern world.
That fraction is gasoline: energy so dense a few liters can lift a human being. No fuel this concentrated had ever existed. This — not the wing — was the missing piece.

1876 (Otto four-stroke)
The four-stroke cycle that now runs in more than a billion vehicles was first written down by a Frenchman who never built it. Alphonse Beau de Rochas patented the principle on paper in 1862 — fourteen years before Otto's first working engine — and forgot it. When the dormant pamphlet resurfaced in 1886, it stripped Otto of his German patent, even though he had worked out the cycle entirely on his own.
An engine that burns fuel inside the cylinder itself, so the expanding combustion gases push directly on the piston. Nikolaus Otto's four-stroke cycle — intake, compression, power, exhaust — made it practical.
Burn that gasoline inside a light metal cylinder — no boiler, no coal, no water tank. For the first time an engine makes far more power than it weighs.

1903 (Wright Flyer)
The first flight of the Wright Flyer, at Kitty Hawk on 17 December 1903 with Orville at the controls, lasted just 12 seconds and covered about 120 feet — less than the wingspan of a modern airliner. Three more flights followed that morning; on the fourth, Wilbur stayed up 59 seconds and flew 852 feet. The whole of powered aviation began in under a minute of total airtime.
A powered, controlled heavier-than-air craft that flies by driving a wing through the air fast enough for its shape to generate lift — the first machine to carry a person in sustained, steerable flight.
Bolt that engine onto a wing the ancient kite-makers would have recognized, and two dozen centuries of watching birds finally pays off. It was never the shape of the wing. It was the weight of the fire.
