The oldest known piece of string is a three-ply cord fragment from Abri du Maras in France, twisted some 41,000–52,000 years ago — not by our species, but by Neanderthals. Cordage is older than every wall, wheel, and word ever written.

A single plant fiber is short and feeble; twist a bundle so friction locks the strands together, and the result is longer and stronger than anything in it. Twisting makes thread, thread plied makes cord and rope, and threads interlaced on a loom make cloth. It is a materials technology that requires nothing but hands and weeds.

Archaeologists call it the "string revolution": with cordage came snares, nets, fishing lines, carrying bags, hafted tools, and tethers — ways to catch and carry that multiplied what one hunter or gatherer could take. Sewn, fitted clothing (thread plus bone needles) is what let humans survive ice-age winters and settle the cold latitudes of Eurasia and, eventually, the Americas. Almost none of it survives in the ground, which is why the most consequential early technology is also the most invisible.

The minimum method is the reverse wrap: twist a damp fiber bundle until it kinks, fold it, then alternately twist each strand away from you and wrap it back over the other, splicing in new fiber as you go — the opposing twists hold each other permanently. Later, a stick weighted with a clay or stone whorl (the drop spindle) let a spinner twist thread continuously and fast. Cloth came from stretching one set of threads on a frame and lacing another set through them: the loom.

Nets and lines opened rivers and seas as food sources; bowstrings made archery possible; rope made rafts, then rigging, then sailing ships. Tailored clothing opened every climate on Earth to settlement. And millennia later the same craft, mechanized, opened the industrial age: the spinning jenny and the power loom — textile machines — were the first factories.

步骤

  1. 01Gather long fibers: crush dried nettle stalks and peel the outer fiber away from the woody core, or strip the stringy inner bark from a basswood or cedar branch.
  2. 02Dry the fibers fully, then dampen them slightly so they flex without snapping.
  3. 03Take a thin bundle and twist it in one direction until it kinks and folds back on itself, giving you two strands joined at a bend.
  4. 04Hold the bend. Twist the strand farther from you tightly away from your body, then carry it over the near strand toward you. Repeat, alternating strands — the two twists lock against each other.
  5. 05Before either strand runs thin, lay a fresh bundle of fiber along its end and twist it in to splice; stagger splices so they never line up.
  6. 06Continue to the length you need, then knot or whip the free end.

如何确认它成功了

Good cord holds its twist by itself when you let go instead of unraveling, and a finished two-ply carries far more weight than the same fibers pulled straight — hang a load from it and it should not slip or shed.

会出什么错

  • Strands wrapped the same direction they were twisted — with no opposing twist there is nothing to lock the plies, so the cord un-plies and unravels under load.
  • Splices placed at the same point in both strands — one weak spot that snaps first every time.
  • Fibers worked bone-dry — they crack and shed instead of gripping each other.
