The word "electricity" is just Greek for "amber-stuff" (ēlektron) — the entire electrical age is named after a fossilized tree resin that Thales rubbed with fur 2,600 years ago.

Static electricity is electric charge that collects on a surface and stays put, instead of flowing onward as a current. Rub two unlike materials together — amber against fur, a balloon against hair — and electrons hop from one to the other, leaving one object negatively charged and the other positive. The charged object then tugs at light, uncharged things nearby (bits of straw, dust, hair) and can leap the gap to a neighbour as a faint, crackling spark. The first recorded notice of the effect is traditionally credited to the Greek philosopher Thales of Miletus, around 600 BC.

For more than two thousand years the rubbed-amber trick was a curiosity with no theory behind it — proof that some invisible influence existed, but no way to command it. Its importance is almost entirely retrospective: this is the loose thread that, once pulled, unravelled into the whole electrical age. Every later node in this branch — the charge-storing jar, the battery, the motor, the grid — traces back to someone finally asking *why* the amber pulled the straw.

Nothing has to be built: the effect appears wherever a dry day meets two unlike materials rubbed together. The Greeks used amber (fossilised tree resin) polished with wool or fur; later experimenters found that glass rubbed with silk, or hard rubber with cat's fur, worked even better. By 1600 the English physician William Gilbert had catalogued dozens of such substances, distinguished this attraction from ordinary magnetism, and coined the Latin *electricus* — "amber-like" — to name them.
