Growing a planned sequence of different crops on the same field in successive years — a soil-enriching legume, a soil-draining cereal, and a rest — instead of the same crop over and over, so that fertility, pests, and weeds never get the chance to run one way.

Simply changing how the fallow was scheduled reshaped medieval Europe. Under the old two-field system, half of every farm lay idle each year to recover; the three-field system dropped the idle share to one-third by splitting the worked land into an autumn cereal, a spring cereal-or-legume, and a fallow. That single bookkeeping change put roughly a third more land into production at once — with no new tools — and helped power the population growth of the High Middle Ages.

Crop rotation is farming by sequence rather than by repetition: on each field you grow a planned succession of different crops, chosen so that what one crop takes out, the next puts back. The classic ingredients are a cereal that draws heavily on the soil, a legume — beans, peas, vetch, clover — that quietly returns nitrogen to it, and a fallow rest, ideally grazed so that animals manure the ground. Roman writers already understood the core of it: Columella, in the first century AD, held that legumes such as beans, vetch, and lupines do not exhaust a field but enrich it, and recommended plowing a lupine crop under as a substitute for manure.

A field grown to the same crop year after year does two things: it runs down the specific nutrients that crop needs, and it lets that crop's particular weeds, pests, and diseases build up undisturbed. Rotation breaks both. Long before anyone could name nitrogen or a soil pathogen, farmers observed that grain after beans grew tall and grain after grain grew thin, and they built calendars around it. The payoff was land that stayed productive indefinitely without a fresh source of fertility — the difference between farming a place for a generation and farming it for a thousand years.

The three-field and later four-course rotations fed the growth of medieval and early-modern Europe and freed enough labor and grain to underwrite towns.
