Germ theory is the understanding that many diseases are caused by microscopic living organisms — bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites — that enter the body and reproduce. Illness is not bad air, imbalanced humors, or divine punishment but infection by specific, identifiable agents. Louis Pasteur and Robert Koch established it experimentally between the 1860s and 1880s.

Once disease had a physical, living cause, it could be attacked at the source: killed, blocked, or avoided. Germ theory rationalized handwashing, sterilization, antiseptics, quarantine, safe water, and eventually antibiotics and vaccines. It converted medicine from a field of superstition and guesswork into a science.

Pasteur's swan-neck flask experiments of 1861 showed that sterile broth stayed sterile as long as dust and microbes were kept out, demolishing the idea that life spontaneously arose in decay. Robert Koch later tied specific microbes to specific diseases. Tragically, Ignaz Semmelweis had already cut maternal deaths by roughly 90 percent with chlorinated handwashing in 1847 — the right practice fourteen years before anyone could prove why it worked, for which he was rejected and destroyed.
