Germ Theory
The realization that many diseases are caused by invisible living organisms that invade the body and multiply — not by bad air, imbalance, or fate.

Some of the swan-necked flasks Louis Pasteur shaped in the 1860s still sit clear and sterile in Paris more than 150 years later — left open to the air, the broth inside never spoiled, because the flask's curved neck kept airborne microbes out.
Ce que c'est
Germ theory is the understanding that many diseases are caused by microscopic living organisms — bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites — that enter the body and reproduce. Illness is not bad air, imbalanced humors, or divine punishment but infection by specific, identifiable agents. Louis Pasteur and Robert Koch established it experimentally between the 1860s and 1880s.
Pourquoi cela a compté
Once disease had a physical, living cause, it could be attacked at the source: killed, blocked, or avoided. Germ theory rationalized handwashing, sterilization, antiseptics, quarantine, safe water, and eventually antibiotics and vaccines. It converted medicine from a field of superstition and guesswork into a science.
Comment cela a été fait
Pasteur's swan-neck flask experiments of 1861 showed that sterile broth stayed sterile as long as dust and microbes were kept out, demolishing the idea that life spontaneously arose in decay. Robert Koch later tied specific microbes to specific diseases. Tragically, Ignaz Semmelweis had already cut maternal deaths by roughly 90 percent with chlorinated handwashing in 1847 — the right practice fourteen years before anyone could prove why it worked, for which he was rejected and destroyed.
Ce que cela a débloqué
Germ theory is the foundation of all modern infection control: antiseptic surgery, sterilization, pasteurization, sanitation science, antibiotics, and vaccines. It is arguably the single idea that has added the most years to human life.
Version minimale viable
Boil broth in a flask with a long curved neck; if it stays sterile while open to air, the microbes that spoil it must come from the air, not from nothing.
