Pottery is mud made permanent. Heat clay past red heat and its minerals fuse into ceramic — a change that, unlike drying, can never be undone by water. That irreversibility is the whole point: it yields hard, water-holding, fireproof vessels from material lying in nearly every riverbank on Earth.

Dry it slowly for days until every trace of water is gone, then fire it in a pit or bonfire for a few hours and let it cool with the embers. The potter's wheel and the enclosed kiln came thousands of years later; the pit-fired pot is the complete, working technology.

Storage jars underwrote food surplus, and surplus underwrote settled life. Fired clay became brick, and brick became architecture. Kilns pushed to higher temperatures led to glazes and porcelain — and kiln-craft plus clay crucibles became the working equipment of metallurgy and, much later, chemistry. Nearly every furnace-based technology descends from people learning to manage fire around clay.

- 02Knead in roughly one part temper to four parts clay — temper gives escaping steam a way out and stops cracking.
- 03Form the pot: pinch a ball open with your thumbs, or stack rolled coils and smooth them into an even wall no thicker than your finger.
- 04Dry slowly in shade for several days until bone-dry — a ready pot no longer feels cool against your cheek.
- 05Warm the pots beside a fire for an hour, then stack them in a shallow pit, heap fuel over and around them, and burn hot for two to several hours.
- 06Let the pit die down and cool completely — hours, better overnight — before touching anything.
