Attenuated vaccines
Deliberately weakening a living pathogen — by ageing it, exposing it to oxygen, or passing it through other animals — until it can no longer cause serious disease but still teaches the immune system to recognize the real thing. Louis Pasteur turned Jenner's single lucky cowpox into a general method that could be aimed, in principle, at one disease after another.

By the traditional account, the method was born from a forgotten flask. In 1879 Pasteur's assistant Charles Chamberland is said to have left a culture of chicken-cholera bacteria on the bench over a summer holiday; the aged, enfeebled germs no longer killed the chickens injected with them — and those same chickens then survived a fresh, fully virulent dose that killed the others. Whatever the exact story, a weakened culture had shown how to make immunity to order.

An attenuated vaccine is a live germ that has been crippled on purpose. It is still the real organism — it can enter the body and multiply a little — but it has lost the strength to cause serious disease. That is enough for the immune system to meet it, learn its markings, and remember them. Where Edward Jenner had relied on a lucky accident of nature (cowpox happening to resemble smallpox), Pasteur showed that weakening could be done deliberately, in the laboratory, to a germ of one's choosing.

Vaccination before Pasteur was a single trick that worked for exactly one disease. Attenuation made it a general strategy. Once you accepted germ theory — that each disease is a specific, cultivable microbe — you could grow that microbe, blunt it, and hand the body a rehearsal for the real infection. It was Pasteur who, in 1881, proposed widening the word "vaccination" to cover all such procedures, "as an homage," he said, to Jenner.

Nearly every live vaccine since works Pasteur's way: the tuberculosis BCG, yellow fever, the oral polio vaccine, and the measles, mumps, and rubella shots are all attenuated strains. The idea that a pathogen can be systematically tamed into a teacher — rather than found, ready-tamed, in nature — is the foundation of the vaccine industry and of much of modern immunology.
Versión mínima viable
Grow the disease microbe in pure culture, then weaken it — let the culture age, warm it, or grow it under conditions it dislikes — until injecting it causes only a mild, survivable illness; the recovered animal then resists the full-strength germ.
