The word "vaccine" comes from the Latin vacca, "cow," because the first one used cowpox — and smallpox, the disease it was aimed at, is the only human disease ever wiped from the Earth, declared eradicated in 1980.

Vaccination trains the immune system to recognize and defeat a dangerous pathogen by first exposing it to a safe imitation — a weakened, killed, or closely related germ. The body builds its defenses in advance, so a later real infection is stopped quickly or prevented outright. Edward Jenner demonstrated it in 1796 using cowpox to protect against smallpox.
Por qué importó
Vaccination is one of the rare interventions that prevents disease rather than treating it, and it works at the scale of whole populations. Remarkably, it preceded germ theory by about 65 years — Jenner had no concept of a virus and no idea why cowpox protected against smallpox; he only observed that it did. Earlier practices of variolation, deliberate mild smallpox exposure, were already used in China and the Ottoman world.
Cómo se hizo
Jenner noticed that milkmaids who had caught mild cowpox seemed immune to smallpox. In 1796 he scratched material from a cowpox sore into a boy's arm, then later exposed him to smallpox — and the boy did not fall ill. The method spread quickly as a far safer alternative to variolation.
Qué desbloqueó
Vaccination has prevented billions of infections and eradicated smallpox, the only human disease ever eliminated. It underpins childhood immunization and the control of polio, measles, and tetanus, and it founded the science of immunology. Today's mRNA and other vaccine platforms are its direct descendants.
Versión mínima viable
Take fluid from a mild cowpox sore and scratch a trace of it into a healthy person's arm, so their body learns to resist the far deadlier smallpox.
