The Sumerians and Babylonians did arithmetic in base 60, and you still use it every single day: 60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in an hour, 360 degrees in a circle — a 4,000-year-old choice of number base, still running the world's clocks.

Qué es

Numbers are a way to strip everything about a pile of things except how many there are; geometry does the same for land, angles, and volume. In Mesopotamia the practice began with small clay tokens — a cone for a measure of grain, a disc for a sheep — exchanged and stored as records of debts and herds. Counting, arithmetic, and rope-and-peg land measurement grew directly out of this bookkeeping, millennia before anyone proved a theorem.

Without numbers there is no tax, no trade beyond barter-by-eyeball, no calendar, no fair division of a harvest or a dead man's estate. Token accounting let strangers verify claims — the record said seventeen sheep, so seventeen sheep were owed regardless of anyone's memory or honesty. Geometry let communities re-mark field boundaries after every Nile or Euphrates flood erased them, converting annual chaos into a solvable problem.

Cómo se hizo

Herders and temple administrators matched physical tokens one-to-one with goods, then sealed tokens inside clay envelopes and pressed their shapes on the outside — at which point the marks alone sufficed and the tokens became redundant. A knotted rope pulled into a 3-4-5 triangle yields an exact right angle with no instrument but string — a technique plausibly available to early surveyors, though firm evidence that ancient rope-stretchers actually used it is thin. Positional (place-value) notation was in use in Babylon by about 2000 BC; a symbol for zero came much later — a placeholder in Babylon by ~300 BC, and zero as a true number in India by ~628 AD — which made calculation radically cheaper.

Writing itself emerged from this accounting, as impressed number-marks acquired signs for the things counted. Numbers underpin measurement standards, calendars, engineering, astronomy, navigation, and money; geometry underpins surveying, architecture, and eventually the mathematics of motion. Nearly every quantitative entry in this archive stands on this node.

Versión mínima viable

Clay or pebble tokens, one per counted thing, plus tally marks scratched on a stick or bone; land measured with a knotted rope stretched taut, with the 3-4-5 knot triangle giving a true right angle.
