The Royal Society, founded in 1660, took as its motto "Nullius in verba" — "take nobody's word for it" — a direct rejection of two thousand years of settling questions by quoting Aristotle. Within two centuries of adopting that rule, humanity learned more about nature than in all prior centuries combined.
Qué es
The scientific method is a discipline for finding out what is actually true: propose an explanation, derive what it predicts, test the prediction under conditions where it could fail, measure the outcome, and submit the whole thing to hostile checking by others. It is not a body of facts but a procedure — the error-correcting loop that produced the facts. Francis Bacon's *Novum Organum* (1620) gave it a manifesto, and institutions like the Royal Society gave it a permanent home.
Por qué importó
Humans are fluent, confident explainers, and most confident explanations in history have been wrong; for millennia disputes about nature were settled by authority, eloquence, or seniority. The method replaces "who said it" with "what happened when we tested it," which is the only known way to reliably sort truth from plausible error. It is arguably the single most valuable item in this archive, because a group that holds only this node can regenerate every other entry, while a group holding every other entry but not this one cannot fix what it gets wrong.

The pieces assembled over centuries — Greek geometry's proof standards, the controlled optical experiments of Ibn al-Haytham (Alhazen) around 1021, craftsmen's trial-and-error — but the systematic institutionalization came in seventeenth-century Europe: Bacon argued for systematic experiment over inherited authority, Galileo showed that measurement plus mathematics beats intuition, and printed journals let results be replicated and attacked across a continent. The decisive social invention was making disagreement productive: peer review, replication, and priority-by-publication turned scholars from quote-traders into a distributed error-detection network. A restarting group establishes it by rule, not equipment: no claim is accepted until it survives a test designed to kill it, and every test is written down for strangers to repeat.

Everything dated after roughly 1650 in this archive flows through it: modern chemistry, electromagnetism, germ theory, engines, semiconductors, and medicine are its direct output. It also compounds — each verified result becomes a tool for the next test — which is why the curve of human capability bends sharply upward at exactly the moment the method takes hold.
