In the fifty years after Gutenberg's press, European printers produced millions of books — by most estimates more than all the continent's scribes had copied in the previous thousand years. Bi Sheng had invented movable type in China around 1040, four centuries earlier.

Qué es

The printing press combines three inventions into one system: durable metal type cast letter-by-letter from reusable molds, sticky oil-based ink that clings to metal, and a screw press that stamps a full page onto paper in one even squeeze. Because the type is movable, the same few thousand pieces of metal can print any text ever written, then be broken up and rearranged for the next one. Johannes Gutenberg assembled the system in Mainz around 1440–1450; Bi Sheng had built movable type from baked clay in Song-dynasty China around 1040, and Korea printed the Jikji with movable metal type in 1377 — decades before Gutenberg — though neither East Asian tradition, burdened by thousands of characters, spread as Gutenberg's alphabet-friendly system did.

Before print, copying was the bottleneck of civilization: a manuscript book took a scribe months to a year, so books were treasures and most knowledge lived in a few fragile copies. Print made texts identical, abundant, and cheap — errors stopped compounding with each copy, and a discovery published in one city could be read in a hundred within months. Luther's Reformation, the spread of vernacular literacy, and the scientific journal are all direct consequences of a machine that made ideas outrun their suppressors.

Cómo se hizo

Gutenberg, a goldsmith, cut each letter in relief on a steel punch, hammered the punch into copper to form a matrix, and clamped the matrix into an adjustable hand mold so a printer could cast identical type by the thousand from molten lead alloy. A compositor arranged type into pages locked in an iron frame, inked it with leather-padded balls, and an adapted wine-style screw press pressed the sheet. Two workers could pull roughly 200–250 sheets an hour — as many as 3,600 in a day — against a scribe's one or two pages.

Qué desbloqueó

Print created mass literacy, standardized languages, the newspaper, and the reliable accumulation of knowledge that the Scientific Revolution ran on — Copernicus, Vesalius, and Galileo were arguments conducted in print. It made cheap identical copies the default state of information, a property every later medium (telegraph, radio, internet) inherited and accelerated. It is also the ancestor of printing as manufacturing, a line that runs all the way to photolithography printing circuits with light.

Versión mínima viable

Cast individual letters in a lead-tin-antimony alloy from copper matrices, compose them into a page locked in a frame, ink the surface, and squeeze dampened paper against it in a screw press.
