Farming was invented from scratch at least seven separate times, by peoples who never met — in the Fertile Crescent, China, Mesoamerica, the Andes, and elsewhere — over the several thousand years after the last Ice Age ended.

The deliberate cultivation of chosen plants — clearing ground, sowing seed, tending, and harvesting — to turn a patch of land into a reliable, repeating source of calories. It replaces the search for wild food with the management of a controlled food supply. It is arguably the most consequential thing our species has ever done.

A hunted-and-gathered landscape feeds only a handful of people per square mile; a farmed one feeds many times more, and yields a storable surplus. That surplus is the hinge of history: it frees some people from finding food, and everything we call civilization — cities, writing, specialists, states — grows in the room that freedom opens. It also chained humanity to relentless labor, crowd disease, and new inequality.

Farming emerged gradually as foragers began favoring, protecting, and finally sowing the most useful wild plants near their camps, selecting over generations for larger seeds and steadier yields. It was not invented once and spread, but arose independently on several continents from whatever grew locally — wheat and barley here, rice and millet there, maize, squash, and potatoes elsewhere.

Permanent settlement, food storage, dense populations, and the division of labor that makes every other node in this archive possible. Seed saving, animal domestication, irrigation, and the first cities all follow directly from it.

Clear a patch of ground, sow seed saved from useful wild plants, keep out weeds and animals, and harvest — repeating each season on the same land.
