The transport wheel is shockingly late: potters were throwing clay on wheels and smiths were smelting copper before anyone put a wheel under a load. In the Americas it never happened at all — archaeologists find wheeled toy animals in ancient Mexico, but with no oxen or horses to pull, nobody ever scaled them up to a cart.

A wheel-and-cart is a rolling platform: round discs mounted on an axle beneath a load-bearing frame, so friction against the ground is replaced by rotation at a bearing. The disc is the easy part; the hard part is the wheel-axle joint, which must be carved round and smooth enough to turn freely for hours under a load without seizing or wobbling apart. That bearing problem is why the wheel arrived thousands of years after humans could have built one.

Before the cart, everything overland moved on human backs, pack animals, or dragged sledges, which capped how much grain, timber, ore, or manure could travel any distance. A cart pulled by a pair of oxen let one farmer move loads that would have taken a whole team of porters, so farms could work land far from the river and villages could haul their harvest to market. The earliest evidence — a wagon drawn on the Bronocice pot in Poland and preserved wheels from the Ljubljana Marshes — appears almost simultaneously across Europe and the Near East around 3500–3100 BC, and the idea never stopped spreading.

The first wheels were solid wood: two or three planks doweled together, cut into a circle, with a hole for the axle bored through the center or a fixed axle rotating in wooden brackets under the cart bed. Grease — animal fat or tallow — kept the bearing from squealing and burning. Around 2000 BC steppe wheelwrights learned to build spoked wheels with bent-wood rims, light enough for a fast horse-drawn chariot instead of a plodding ox wagon.

Wheeled transport plus animal traction opened the interior of continents: steppe peoples loaded their households into wagons and colonized grasslands no riverboat could reach. It gave civilization the war chariot, the farm wagon, the wheelbarrow, and the whole logistics of roads and cities. And the precise, load-bearing wheel-on-axle joint became a template for rotary machinery — the water wheel that followed is, at heart, a cart wheel put to work.
