When William the Conqueror's surveyors compiled the Domesday Book in 1086, they recorded 5,624 water mills in England — roughly one for every 350 people — in a kingdom that possessed no other kind of engine at all.

A water wheel is a wheel rimmed with paddles or buckets, mounted so that a stream's flow — or water falling from a channel above — pushes it around continuously. Its turning shaft delivers steady rotary power that can be geared up, geared down, or redirected to whatever machine needs driving. It is the first device in history that converted a force of nature into sustained mechanical work.

Until the water wheel, every joule of mechanical work came from a living body, and grinding the daily grain alone consumed hours of drudgery in every household. A mill did that work tirelessly, around the clock, at no cost in food. The Romans showed how far this could scale at Barbegal, near Arles, where sixteen wheels cascading down a hillside in the second century AD ground flour on an industrial scale for the surrounding city — a factory fifteen centuries before the word existed.

The water wheel emerged in the Hellenistic Mediterranean around the third to first centuries BC; Vitruvius described the classic design about 25 BC. A wooden wheel on a horizontal axle carried flat paddles (undershot, set in the current) or buckets (overshot, fed from a channel above, extracting several times more power); a right-angle pair of wooden gears turned the horizontal rotation into the vertical spin of a millstone. Everything — wheel, gears, sluice — could be built by a village carpenter from timber, with iron only at the bearings.

Medieval Europe pushed water power far beyond grain: wheels fulled cloth, sawed timber, crushed ore, drew wire, and drove the bellows and trip-hammers that made blast-furnace ironworking possible. The mill established the pattern of the factory — machines clustered around a power source — and mill-wright gearing became the school of practical mechanical engineering. Its direct descendants, water turbines, still generate about a seventh (roughly 15 percent) of the world's electricity.
