The first transatlantic telegram — Queen Victoria's 1858 message to President Buchanan — took about sixteen hours to tap through the cable, and New York still celebrated so hard that fireworks set City Hall's roof on fire: the alternative was ten days by the fastest steamship.

The electric telegraph sends messages as timed pulses of current in a wire: close a switch at one end, and an electromagnet at the other end clicks, moves a needle, or marks a paper tape. Cooke and Wheatstone patented a working needle telegraph in England in 1837, the same year Samuel Morse demonstrated his in America; Morse's dot-dash code, refined with Alfred Vail, became the shared language of the wires. It is the first machine in history to separate the message from any physical carrier.

For all of prior human history, information moved at the speed of whatever carried it — a rider, a ship, a pigeon. The telegraph broke that ceiling: prices, news, orders, and warnings began arriving in minutes instead of weeks, and markets, newspapers, railways, and armies reorganized around the fact. By 1866 a durable cable spanned the Atlantic, and by century's end a global web of wires — the "Victorian Internet" — had put most of the world's cities within conversational reach of one another.

A minimum line was startlingly cheap: zinc-copper batteries, iron wire strung on poles with glass insulators, the ground itself as the return conductor, and at each end a key and an electromagnetic sounder. Operators sent Morse code by hand at twenty to thirty words a minute, with relays — electromagnets closing a fresh battery circuit — regenerating the signal on long routes. Submarine cables demanded far more: gutta-percha insulation, armored sheathing, and Lord Kelvin's sensitive mirror galvanometer to read the faint pulses that survived an ocean crossing.

The telegraph created global news agencies, synchronized time zones for the railways, standardized commodity markets, and command-and-control warfare. Technically, it trained the world in electrical engineering: the telephone, radio, and undersea communications all began as attempts to improve or multiply telegraph channels. It established the founding idea of the information age — that a message is a pattern, and patterns can travel at the speed of electricity.

One battery, one long insulated wire (earth can be the return path), an electromagnet at the far end that clicks a lever, and an agreed code of short and long pulses.
