Telephone

A diaphragm turns the pressure waves of a voice into a smoothly varying electric current; an identical device at the far end turns that current back into sound. Where the telegraph sent coded clicks, the telephone sent the living waveform of speech itself down a wire.

Bell's telephone patent, US 174,465, was granted on 7 March 1876 — and Elisha Gray filed a competing caveat for a telephone at the very same patent office on the very same day the applications went in, 14 February 1876, by some accounts only hours later. Three days after the patent issued, on 10 March 1876, Bell spoke the first intelligible telephone sentence to his assistant in the next room: "Mr. Watson — come here — I want to see you."

A telephone converts sound into a continuously varying electric current and back again. Speak, and the pressure waves of your voice push a thin diaphragm; the diaphragm's motion is turned into an electrical signal whose strength rises and falls in step with the sound — an *analogue* of the voice. That current travels the wire and drives an electromagnet at the far end, tugging a second diaphragm through the identical dance, which pushes the air and reproduces your words. Unlike the telegraph, which sent a stream of on/off clicks standing for letters, the telephone transmits the whole shape of the sound wave, so tone, accent and emotion survive the trip.

The telegraph had already broken the link between a message and its physical carrier, but it still demanded a coded intermediary — an operator to translate speech into dots and back. The telephone removed the operator from the message itself: ordinary people could talk to each other directly across a city or a continent, in real time, in their own voices. It rewired commerce, cities, and private life, and it built out the first great switched network — the exchanges, wires and switchboards whose descendants carry the internet today.

The telephone created the switched communication network as an institution: exchanges, area codes, operators, and eventually automatic switching that itself became an early proving ground for Boolean logic. It drove a century of work on amplifiers, cables, microwave relays and, at Bell Labs, the transistor and information theory. Every later real-time voice medium — mobile phones, VoIP, video calls — is the telephone's idea carried onto new physics: capture the waveform, send it, and rebuild it at the other end.

実用最小限の形

One wire between two identical electromagnetic transducers — each a thin iron diaphragm with a coil sitting close to a permanent magnet. Speak into one and its diaphragm's motion generates a matching current in the coil; at the other end that current wiggles the second diaphragm and remakes the sound. No battery is needed: the voice supplies the power.
