The oldest known pottery vessels, from Xianrendong Cave in China, are about 20,000 years old — ice-age hunter-gatherers were firing cooking pots roughly ten thousand years before anyone on Earth farmed.
Clay shaped by hand and hardened in fire — among the first materials humans transformed permanently into a new, durable substance, giving them sealed vessels that could store food and, above all, boil it.
Master a furnace hot enough to fire clay and you're most of the way to one hot enough to fuse silica.

When a trading ship sank off Uluburun, Turkey, around 1320 BC, its cargo included some 175 ingots of raw colored glass. Within about two centuries of the first glass vessels, raw glass was already a bulk export commodity of Bronze Age empires.
Sand melted with a flux of soda or plant ash until it fuses into a transparent solid — shapeable while hot, rigid and chemically inert forever after.
Melt sand and it flows into glass — the first time humans turned a handful of beach into something new, hard, and perfectly clear.

We can date eyeglasses to about 1286 because of a sermon: in 1306 the friar Giordano da Pisa told a Florence congregation that "it is not yet twenty years since there was found the art of making spectacles," adding that he had personally met the man who first made them.
Glass ground into curved surfaces that bend light to a focus — correcting aging eyes, and, stacked in tubes, revealing worlds too far or too small to see at all.
Grind that glass into a lens and you can bend light exactly where you want it, with a precision measured in wavelengths.

1957 AD
A modern EUV lithography machine — direct descendant of the 1957 technique — makes its light by blasting tens of thousands of molten tin droplets per second with a laser into plasma many times hotter than the sun's surface; each machine costs on the order of $200 million, and only one company on Earth (ASML) can build one.
Printing with light: project a circuit pattern onto a light-sensitive coating on a silicon wafer, so billions of microscopic transistors can be made in a single exposure.
Now shine light THROUGH those lenses to print a pattern finer than a bacterium onto a wafer of ultra-pure silicon — itself refined from sand. You stop wiring circuits and start photographing them.

The insight was accepting worse parts: a silicon resistor is inferior to a real one, but if everything is silicon, the whole circuit can be printed at once — and printing scales in a way hand-wiring never can.
An entire circuit — transistors, resistors, wiring — manufactured as one piece on a single sliver of silicon.
One exposure prints thousands of transistors at once, already wired together on a single sliver. The circuit is no longer assembled; it's developed, like film.

1971 AD
The first microprocessor (Intel 4004) wasn't built to power computers — it was a cost-cutting shortcut for a Japanese desk calculator. Intel bought the rights back for $60,000.
A complete computer processor on a single chip.
Print enough transistors in exactly the right pattern and the sliver of sand can add, compare, decide, remember — an entire computer on a chip smaller than a fingernail.
