The oldest known pottery vessels, from Xianrendong Cave in China, are about 20,000 years old — ice-age hunter-gatherers were firing cooking pots roughly ten thousand years before anyone on Earth farmed.
Clay shaped by hand and hardened in fire — among the first materials humans transformed permanently into a new, durable substance, giving them sealed vessels that could store food and, above all, boil it.
Civilization's first chemistry was a clay pot over a fire: evaporate, heat, transform. Every synthetic material ever made begins with this move — reshaping matter with heat.

The word "salary" descends from the Latin salarium, rooted in sal, "salt," and the phrase "worth his salt" with it — a memory of an age when salt was so valuable that it built roads and funded states, from Rome's Via Salaria, the great Salt Road, to the French gabelle, the salt tax that helped stoke a revolution.
A mineral the body must have and cannot make, and the great preservative before refrigeration — history's first strategic resource, taxed and fought over by empires.
Boil seawater dry and you get salt — and the buried insight that matter holds reactive parts you can separate out and put to work. Splitting salt still feeds the plastics industry today.

1791 AD (industrial soda)
The chemist Justus von Liebig wrote in 1843 that you could fairly judge a nation's commercial prosperity by a single number: how much sulfuric acid it consumes. For the next century the yardstick held, because almost nothing manufactured — soap, glass, paper, textiles, fertilizer — was made without acid or alkali somewhere in the chain.
The workhorse chemicals of industry — sulfuric acid, soda ash, caustic lye — made in bulk from salt, sulfur, and limestone instead of scavenged from plant ashes.
From salt and lime come the first strong acids and bases — the crowbars a chemist uses to pry molecules apart and force them back together in new shapes.

1888 AD (first curriculum)
Every chemical plant on Earth — oil refinery, brewery, dye works, fertilizer factory — is built from the same short list of about a dozen "unit operations" (distillation, filtration, heat exchange, crystallization, drying...), an insight Arthur D. Little formalized in 1915 that let a single profession design all of them.
The discipline of running chemical reactions continuously, safely, and at factory scale — built on the insight that every plant is the same dozen basic operations recombined.
Move that chemistry out of the flask and into a factory of tanks, towers, and controlled reactions, and you can build new matter by the ton instead of the gram.

1907 (Bakelite, the first fully synthetic plastic)
Bakelite was invented by a man who was already rich enough not to need to. Leo Baekeland had sold his photographic-paper company, Velox, to Kodak in 1899 for a reported $750,000 — a fortune then — which freed him to tinker. In 1907 he cooked phenol with formaldehyde under heat and pressure into a hard, moldable resin that had never existed in nature: the first fully synthetic plastic. A fully cured Bakelite object is, in effect, one single cross-linked molecule.
Materials built from giant molecules — long chains or networks of a small unit repeated thousands of times — assembled entirely from synthetic chemicals. The first family of substances with no counterpart in nature.
In 1907, Bakelite: the first substance that never existed anywhere in nature — molecules linked into long chains, moldable when hot, hard forever after. Plastic is born.

1935 (Carothers's nylon)
Nylon reached the public as women's stockings, and the appetite for it was frightening. On 15 May 1940, the first day nylon hosiery went on sale nationwide in the United States, some 780,000 pairs sold across the country — about 72,000 in New York alone; the roughly four million pairs shipped to shelves sold out in the most-wanted sizes within days, and some 64 million pairs sold in the first year. It was mass hysteria over a fiber that had not existed five years earlier — a molecule first pulled in a laboratory on 28 February 1935.
A textile fiber built entirely from synthetic chemicals rather than grown or gathered — long polymer chains, spun into filament and stretched until the molecules line up into a strong, fine thread. Nylon, made at DuPont in 1935, was the first fiber with no natural counterpart at all.
Spin those same chains into thread and you get nylon. Its first mass-market debut, in 1938, was the bristles of a toothbrush — the day plastic entered the bathroom, on its way to entering everything.
