Charcoal burns hot enough to melt copper and smelt iron; a plain wood fire could not. For roughly 5,000 years, virtually every metal object on Earth owed its existence to this one trick.

Wood heated in near-total absence of air. Water and volatile compounds bake off, leaving a lattice of nearly pure carbon. The process (pyrolysis) is humanity's first industrial chemistry.

Open wood fires usually run 600–900 °C — hot enough to cook, too unreliable to work most metals. Charcoal with forced air passes 1,100 °C and beyond. That temperature gap is the doorway between the Stone Age and the age of metals.
它如何造出
See recipe: the earth-mound kiln, essentially unchanged from the Bronze Age to the 19th century. The collier's whole craft is starving the fire of exactly the right amount of air for days on end.

- 01Stack dried wood tightly into a dome around a central channel.
- 02Cover the dome completely with turf and soil, leaving a top vent and a few base vents.
- 03Light through the central channel; once burning, close the top vent.
- 04Manage the base vents so the mound smolders (blue smoke) without flaming for 3–7 days.
- 05When smoke turns thin and clear, seal every vent and let it cool for days before opening.
如何确认它成功了
Good charcoal is black through its full cross-section, rings almost like metal when struck, and snaps clean. Brown centers mean under-cooked wood.
会出什么错
- ⚠ Air leak → mound catches fire openly and burns to ash (total loss).
- ⚠ Opened too early → the whole batch ignites on contact with air.
