Gunpowder was a side effect of the search for eternal life. Chinese Taoist alchemists mixing elixirs stumbled on it, and a 9th-century manual, the Zhenyuan Miaodao Yaolüe, is essentially a safety warning: some who heated sulfur and saltpeter with honey, it records, had "their hands and faces burnt, and even the whole house burned down." The recipe meant to defeat death became the engine of gunpowder warfare.

Gunpowder is the first substance humans learned to burn on command, faster than open air will allow. Ordinary fuels need oxygen from the surrounding air, which limits how fast they can burn. Gunpowder carries its oxygen inside the mixture, chemically bound in the saltpeter (potassium nitrate). Light it and the saltpeter feeds oxygen straight to the charcoal and sulfur, so the whole mass burns through in a single rushing flash — releasing hot gas thousands of times the volume of the powder, all at once.

For the first time, chemical energy could be stored quietly and released instantly. That gas, confined in a tube, throws a projectile; unconfined, it blasts rock. Gunpowder ended the age of the castle wall and the armored knight, leveled the advantage of muscle and fortification, and put battlefield power into a manufactured chemical rather than a bloodline. It also became the miner's and quarryman's tool, blasting the canals, roads, and tunnels of the industrial age.

See the recipe, described here at the historical and encyclopedic level. The oxidizer, saltpeter, was the hard part: it had to be scraped from cave floors, dung heaps, and nitrate-rich earth, then purified by the salt-maker's craft of dissolving and recrystallizing until clean. Charcoal and sulfur were easy. The classic three-part ratio and the intimate wet mixing that made the powder reliable were worked out slowly over centuries, from the roughly half-saltpeter incendiaries of the earliest Chinese formulas to the higher-saltpeter blends that could truly propel and burst.

Firearms and artillery, and with them a reordering of empires and the rise of the centralized, tax-funded state that could afford them. In mining and civil engineering, controlled blasting reshaped the landscape. And as the first practical study of a fast oxidizer-fuel reaction, gunpowder is an ancestor of the whole later science of energetic chemistry — including the propellants that later carried rockets off the planet.

- 01Purify the saltpeter first: crude niter is mostly other salts, and only well-recrystallized potassium nitrate makes the mixture work at all.
- 02The classic encyclopedia proportion is roughly 75 parts saltpeter, 15 parts charcoal, 10 parts sulfur by weight; early Chinese formulas ran nearer 50% saltpeter and so only burned fiercely rather than exploding.
- 03The three solids are ground fine and mixed as intimately as possible so oxidizer and fuel sit grain-against-grain — historically this was done wet, as a damp paste, because grinding the dry mixture invites a friction spark.

A small pinch on a fireproof surface, touched off from a safe distance, should flash and vanish in an instant with a puff of white smoke, not smolder like a coal. The lower a mixture's saltpeter, the slower and more smoke; raising the saltpeter toward the classic ratio is what turns a fierce fire into a rapid deflagration.

- ⚠ This mixture is a genuine hazard, and its dangers are the point of listing it: friction, a static spark, or a stray ember can set it off with no warning — which is exactly what burned the alchemists' hands and houses in the 9th-century texts.
- ⚠ Impure saltpeter (contaminated with common salt or damp) — the mixture fizzles, smokes, and will not carry a flame; purity of the oxidizer is everything.
- ⚠ Poor mixing, or a coarse blend — oxidizer and fuel are too far apart to react quickly, so it burns unevenly instead of all at once.
- ⚠ Damp storage — saltpeter draws water from the air and the mixture goes dead; it was kept dry and sealed.
