X-rays

A form of light too energetic for the eye and short enough in wavelength to pass through flesh but not bone or metal — making the inside of a solid, living body visible from the outside for the first time.

On 22 December 1895, weeks after stumbling onto the rays, Wilhelm Röntgen had his wife Anna Bertha place her hand on a photographic plate under the beam. The developed image showed the bones of her hand and the dark band of her wedding ring floating over them. Looking at her own skeleton, she is said to have gasped, "I have seen my death."

X-rays are electromagnetic radiation — the same fundamental stuff as visible light and radio — but with a wavelength thousands of times shorter and an energy thousands of times higher. That short wavelength is what lets them slip between the atoms of soft, light materials like skin and muscle while being absorbed by dense, heavy ones like bone and metal. Send a beam through a hand onto a screen or plate, and the shadow is a map of what is dense inside: the eye sees the outside of the body, the X-ray sees the frame beneath it.

For all of history before 1895, learning what was inside a living body meant cutting it open. Röntgen's rays made the interior legible without a single incision — a broken bone, a swallowed coin, a bullet's resting place, all suddenly visible in minutes. It was the first medical imaging of any kind, and it arrived with astonishing speed: within a year of the discovery, hospitals across Europe and America were photographing fractures. Beyond medicine, the same penetrating beam let engineers see cracks inside cast metal and, later, let physicists see the arrangement of atoms inside crystals.

Röntgen was studying cathode rays in a Crookes–Hittorf discharge tube — an evacuated glass tube energized by an induction coil, *not* the heated-filament vacuum tube that came later. On 8 November 1895, with the tube wrapped in black cardboard in a darkened room, he noticed a screen coated with barium platinocyanide glowing faintly a good distance away. Something invisible was crossing the room and making it fluoresce. Methodically he found it passed through paper, wood, and aluminum, cast shadows of denser matter, and fogged photographic plates. Not knowing what it was, he called it "X." He published within weeks, and in 1901 received the first Nobel Prize in Physics.

X-rays founded radiology and, through it, the entire field of medical imaging that runs on to CT scanning, which is X-rays reconstructed by computer into slices. They gave industry non-destructive testing — seeing flaws inside solid parts. And turned on crystals, X-rays became the ruler that measures the atomic world: X-ray crystallography, the technique that would later reveal the shapes of minerals, metals, proteins, and DNA itself.
