When a trading ship sank off Uluburun, Turkey, around 1320 BC, its cargo included some 175 ingots of raw colored glass. Within about two centuries of the first glass vessels, raw glass was already a bulk export commodity of Bronze Age empires.

Glass is sand persuaded to melt. Pure silica needs around 1,700 °C — unreachable in an ancient furnace — but mixed with a flux of soda or plant ash it melts near 1,000 °C, within reach of charcoal fire, and a little lime keeps the result from dissolving in water. Cooled quickly, the melt never recrystallizes: it freezes into a rigid, transparent solid that can be poured, drawn, molded, and eventually blown.

No other early material was transparent, waterproof, odorless, and chemically inert all at once. Glass vessels stored what clay tainted and metal corroded; glass beads and vessels moved along trade routes as concentrated wealth. Its two killer properties — you can see through it, and almost nothing reacts with it — made it, centuries later, the indispensable material of both optics and chemistry.

Glassmaking grew out of Egyptian and Mesopotamian glaze and faience work: quartz sand or crushed pebbles fused with soda-rich plant ash in clay crucibles over charcoal- or wood-fired furnaces, then worked hot around a clay-and-dung core that was scraped out after cooling. Pliny the Elder tells a story of Phoenician sailors accidentally discovering glass when beach fires melted sand under their cargo of natron — almost certainly a legend, since an open beach fire runs far too cool. Glassblowing, invented around the 1st century BC in the Roman Levant, finally made glass cheap.

Windows let light into buildings while keeping weather out. Blown vessels, then flasks, retorts, and tubing, became the standard apparatus of alchemy and chemistry — reactions you can watch, in containers that don't join in. And ground into curved forms, glass became lenses: spectacles, telescopes, microscopes, and every instrument since that extends the human eye.

  • · Clean, pale quartz sand or crushed white quartz pebbles — as free of iron and clay as possible, since iron tints the glass green or brown
  • · Soda flux: natron (a natural soda mineral) or, more commonly, the hard white ash of burnt coastal salt-plants (saltwort or glasswort)
  • · A little lime — crushed seashell or limestone — to keep the glass from dissolving in water; plant ash often already supplies some
  • · A fireclay crucible that can take the heat without softening
  • · A charcoal- or wood-fired furnace with forced draft (bellows) able to reach roughly 1,100 °C

步骤

  1. 01Wash the sand to remove clay and grit; if starting from pebbles, roast and crush them to a fine, even sand.
  2. 02Prepare the flux: burn saltwort or glasswort to a hard white ash, or grind natron to powder.
  3. 03Mix by rough measure about two parts sand to one part soda ash, plus a small handful of lime — near silica 65 / soda 20 / lime 10.
  4. 04Frit first: heat the mix at moderate red heat, below full melting, stirring until it fuses into a crumbly half-melted cake. This drives off gas and lets the ingredients react without boiling over the crucible. Cool it and grind it up.
  5. 05Load the frit into the crucible and melt it hard with the blast running until it becomes a clear, honey-thick liquid with no unmelted sand grains left.
  6. 06Hold the melt hot and still so the bubbles rise and clear (fining); skim any scum from the surface.
  7. 07Gather the taffy-like melt on an iron rod or wind it around a clay-and-dung core to shape a vessel, reheating whenever it stiffens.
  8. 08Anneal: let the finished piece cool slowly — buried in warm ash, or left in the dying furnace — over hours, so it does not crack from locked-in stress.

如何确认它成功了

Good glass cools to a hard, glossy solid, clear or evenly colored, with no cloudy patches, undissolved sand grains, or large trapped bubbles. It scratches like stone, rings when tapped, and — the real test — does not weep, cloud, or dissolve when left standing in water. A piece that turns slimy or milky in damp had too much soda and too little lime.

会出什么错

  • Furnace too cool or too little flux — the batch never fully melts and stays a sandy, opaque lump.
  • Too much soda and no lime — you get 'water glass,' which slowly weeps or dissolves in damp air.
  • Iron-rich sand — the glass comes out bottle-green or brown; usable, but not clear.
  • Cooling too fast without annealing — internal stress cracks or shatters the piece, sometimes days later.
